Toyota To Launch Twelve Products Over The Next Decade — The Invasion Has Begun
Japanese auto giant Toyota's Indian subsidiary Toyota Kirloskar is planning a move that will make it the center of attraction — an unprecedented 12 product launch over the next 5 and 7 years, thanks to Toyota's alliance with Suzuki.
Toyota's Etios Liva is near the end of production thanks to the BS-VI norms that will come in to effect starting 1 April 2020. Toyota will rebuild it's portfolio with a lot of Maruti Suzuki DNA and plan a total of six products priced under the Rs 12 lakh mark, catering to more that 80% of the four-wheeler market.
According to The Economic Times, Toyota will soon offer a redesigned and re-engineered variant of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and a 'Toyota' variant of the Wagon R EV, both during 2020. A Ciaz variant is scheduled for a 2021-2022 launch, followed by a Ertiga inspired MPV/ SUV in 2023.
Industry expert say that that the Toyota Suzuki alliance can add up to a little over half a million units to both the companies fleets over the next 10 years. Toyota acquires the ability of manufacture smaller cars, while Suzuki has access to Toyota's tech.
Gaurav Vangaal, Country Lead, IHS Markit, said, "Led by the Suzuki alliance, Toyota not only gets increased exposure to the Indian market but can do it at a much lower cost. Due to the addition of new models, the company will be able to utilize its capacity much faster."
Mr Vangaal feels that Toyota can double its output in India by 2025. He reasons that Toyota not only gets additional vehicles for the market, but it gets some of Suzuki's best cars.
During the financial year 2018-19, Toyota Kirloskar retails over 1.5 lakh units of vehicles. While they witness a drop of 1% of the market share, the Innova and the Fortuner helped maintain strong profit margins.
Toyota is hoping that the new products from Maruti Suzuki will will boost the company's India operations. Toyota plans to use the newly acquired Suzuki models for global emerging markets, in addition to gaining access to a much sought after segment in India.
A spokesperson from Toyota Kirloskar said, "As announced during March 2019, the production of the Suzuki-developed compact SUV Vitara Brezza will commence at TKM from 2022. We will not be able to comment on any other any models as it pertains to our future products plans."
Thoughts About The Invasion Toyota Has Planned
This was coming. Suzuki obviously dominates most of the Indian markets with a variety of products, and Toyota was expected to take advantage of it. An alliance may be in order at the moment, but we feel the war has just begun.
