Next-Gen Toyota Innova To Be Powered By Petrol-Hybrid: Diesel Models To Be Discontinued
Toyota India might discontinue the diesel variant of the Innova Crysta in the coming years. The next-generation Toyota Innova Crysta will be available only with a petrol-hybrid engine option as the diesel engine will be phased out.
This move is being considered as Toyota looks to decrease the emissions levels on its best-selling model. Toyota is a car manufacturer that can boast of reliability and dependability more than any other brand in the world.
All of Toyota's cars are utterly reliable. However, the Toyota Innova is just something else. The Innova has garnered a reputation of being one of the most dependable vehicles in the world. One can find the tough-as-nails MPV being used as private vehicles, taxis, company-owned and operated vehicles, fleet vehicles, etc. It is one that can easily take on any challenge thrown at it.
In the Indian market, it is currently available with two diesel and one petrol engine options. The diesel variants are either powered by a 2.4-ltre unit or a 2.8-litre unit. The 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine puts out a maximum power output of 148bhp and a peak torque output of 343Nm.
The 2.8-litre turbo-diesel on the other hand take the output up to 171.6bhp and 360Nm. A less-known fact is that Toyota also offers the Innova Crysta with a 2.7-litre petrol engine that pushes out a maximum power output of 163.7bhp and a peak torque output of 245Nm.
This engine can be availed with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine option is less-known because of its low sales figures. Toyota barely sells double-digits of the petrol-powered Innova Crysta while the diesel-powered models' sales figures go into the hundreds.
This can be attributed to the fact that the petrol engine is obviously thirstier and less efficient as compared to the diesel. Also, the diesel engines are known cover lakhs of kilometres without breaking a sweat.
All these facts put together might lead one into thinking of the possibility that Toyota might consider discontinuing the petrol engine. Toyota though seems to have quite the opposite in mind. According to Livemint, Toyota India will be discontinuing the diesel variants of the Innova Crysta and even the current petrol engine will be replaced by a new petrol-hybrid drivetrain.
This move is being considered as one of the ways to meet stricter emissions and fuel efficiency norms set to be mandated in 2022. Co-incidentally, The next-generation Toyota Innova is slated to be launched by 2022 and hence Toyota is aiming at keeping its emissions as low as possible.
The report quoted a reliable source as saying, "Diesel engine option for the next replacement of Innova seems off the cards right now. Toyota will develop the next generation of the Innova with the hybrid system and given the stricter emission and fuel efficiency norms this strategy makes perfect sense."
The Indian government is pushing hard for electrification of the automotive industry. It is considering various methods to put an end to the production of conventional internal combustion engines.
In 2022, India will be implementing Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms and in 2023, the Real-World Driving Emissions test will be implemented. Toyota's current product line-up is dominated by diesel models.
The Toyota Camry and Prius sedans are the two hybrid models currently on sale in India, but the amount of diesel cars sold by the company far outweighs the petrol and hybrid sales. Hence, Toyota has decided to take this extreme step.
Thoughts On Toyota Discontinuing Diesel-Powered Innova Crysta In Favour Of Petrol-Hybrid
The global automotive industry is facing a paradigm shift in terms of product and drivetrain design. Automotive manufacturers are under pressure not just in India, but across the world, to ensure quick development of EVs and hybrids so that emissions levels will drop.
The development of the Toyota Innova petrol-hybrid too is a result of this pressure. The grunty, bullet-proof diesel engines currently powering the MPV will be missed, but change is inevitable.
