The 2.8-litre turbo-diesel on the other hand take the output up to 171.6bhp and 360Nm. A less-known fact is that Toyota also offers the Innova Crysta with a 2.7-litre petrol engine that pushes out a maximum power output of 163.7bhp and a peak torque output of 245Nm.

This engine can be availed with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine option is less-known because of its low sales figures. Toyota barely sells double-digits of the petrol-powered Innova Crysta while the diesel-powered models' sales figures go into the hundreds.

This can be attributed to the fact that the petrol engine is obviously thirstier and less efficient as compared to the diesel. Also, the diesel engines are known cover lakhs of kilometres without breaking a sweat.

According to Livemint, Toyota India will be discontinuing the diesel variants of the Innova Crysta and even the current petrol engine will be replaced by a new petrol-hybrid drivetrain.

This move is being considered as one of the ways to meet stricter emissions and fuel efficiency norms set to be mandated in 2022. Co-incidentally, The next-generation Toyota Innova is slated to be launched by 2022 and hence Toyota is aiming at keeping its emissions as low as possible.

The report quoted a reliable source as saying, "Diesel engine option for the next replacement of Innova seems off the cards right now.
