Toyota To Discontinue Etios & Etios Liva In India Soon: Will Not Receive BS-VI Engine Updates

Toyota India has decided to discontinue their two entry-level models, the Etios and Etios Liva from the Indian market. The two models will be discontinued from April 2020, which is when the new emission norms are implemented. This will make the Glanza premium hatchback the entry-point to Toyota cars going forward.

According to Autocar India, Toyota feels the investment required to update the Etios and the Etios Liva to comply with the new emission norms, will make them too costly. Also, both models are currently under-performing in terms of sales, which further fails to justify the additional investment as well.

Another reason for the Toyota Etios and Etios Liva to be discontinued is the fact that both models do not comply with the pedestrian protection norms.

This new safety norm which will be made mandatory on all cars from October 2020, will require the company to further update the sheet metal, which again adds to the investment.

Hence, Toyota has decided to instead discontinue the model completely, starting from April next year.

Reports also suggest that 63% of the sales of the Etios Liva (hatchback) and 70% of the Etios (sedan) are diesel variants. Both models use the same 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine, which adds to the investment. This is because updating diesel engines to comply with the new emission norms will be costlier compared to its petrol variants.

Toyota feels that the total investment required to update the Etios and the Etios Liva isn't justified by its sales numbers. Also, the updates will further add to the models' overall cost, making it more expensive than all its rivals in the segment.
