Toyota Will Not Update The Corolla Altis To BS-VI Norms — Suzuki To Miss Out On C-Segment Offering
Toyota Motors has confirmed that they will not be bringing in any BS-VI updates to the Corolla Altis model in the Indian market. According to reports from ET Auto, the discontinuation of the Corolla Altis updates has essentially shut down the re-badged versions of the sedan from Maruti Suzuki in the country.
With Toyota discontinuing any and all updates to the Corolla Altis, the sharing of the C-segment sedan between the two Japanese car makers is now unlikely to happen. As part of the agreement between Suzuki and Toyota, the two brands were supposed to share products for the Indian market. Suzuki has already started the process by offering the Baleno hatchback, which will soon be launched in India as the Glanza.
Maruti Suzuki will also be supplying their compact-SUV segment leader, the Vitara Brezza to Toyota. The Vitara Brezza SUV will soon be manufactured at the Toyota plant on the outskirts of Bangalore.
The Toyota Corolla was part of the sharing plans initially. Toyota were planning to localise production of the Corolla Altis hybrid in India. This was in a bid to comply with the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) norms in the country. However, by sharing compact cars such as the Baleno, Vitara Brezza and Ciaz from Maruti, Toyota will be able to comply with the above mentioned norms.
Also, Toyota feels that the C-segment car market in the Indian market is failing. Hence it doesn't make sense for the brand to upgrade the Corolla Altis in the market even after combining sales of both Maruti and Toyota.
With the Toyota Corolla Altis upgrade now out of the picture, the company will now help Maruti Suzuki to localise hybrid technology for the market. However, the discontinuation of the Toyota Corolla Altis upgrade plans has affected Maruti Suzuki's NEXA showrooms, where the re-badged model was supposed to be sold.
Toyota is currently set to launch the re-badged version of the Baleno hatchback in the Indian market. The Toyota Glanza, as it is called will go on sale in India from 6th June. The Glanza has already been spotted at dealerships multiple times ahead of its launch.
It will feature minimal changes compared to the Baleno, with just the change in badging and the front grille. It will also be powered by the same petrol engine as on the Baleno, while being available in two variants.
Thoughts On The Toyota Corolla Altis Upgrade
The Toyota Corolla Altis is a popular product in the Indian C-segment sedan market. However, with low sales in the segment, Toyota has decided not to bring in any updates to the sedan for the BS-VI norms. It is unlcear as what will happen with the Corolla for now and how both the Japanese car makers will adapt to the development.
