Toyota’s Accessible People Mover To Debut At Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020

Toyota Motor Corporation, the worldwide partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, announced that in order to support the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, it is developing a special new product called the '(APM) Accessible People Mover', a mobility vehicle that is being designed exclusively for use at the Games.

Toyota aims to provide people with the freedom to move, or as they call it, ‘Mobility for All'. The Accessible People Mover takes this to the maximum as it offers a 'last mile' solution that helps move as many people as possible to events and venues at the Games.

Toyota say they plan mobility for athletes and staff at the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, visitors with accessibility needs, the elderly, people with impairments, pregnant women, and families with small children, among others.

Expectation are that one part of the fleet of APMs will be used for relief activities at events and venues. Toyota will deploy roughly 200 of the Accessible People Movers at the Games as support transport for places where events and competitions will be held, and also at non-event official sites such as the Olympic Village.

Toyota plans to deploy a basic model and a ‘relief spec' model of the APM. The basic model is a low-speed, short distance battery operated vehicle that is best for visitors and staff within large grounds and at large events at the Games.

The basic Accessible People Mover model will feature a first row driver's seat, three people seating at the second row, and a two-man seating at the third row. The configuration can be modified to accommodate wheelchairs by folding the seats in the second row.

Toyota has elevated the driver's seat and located it in the center. The company says this allows for the driver to see passengers and support individual needs as they enter and exit the APM.

Passenger seats are accessible from both sides of the APM, and the vehicle features safety bars on both sides. In addition, the vehicle can be fitted with wheelchair anchor plates and ramps to enable the access and transportation of wheelchair passengers.

The Relief Spec model has half the second and third row seat space reserved for a stretcher. Toyota says the stretcher can be secured to the vehicle to facilitate safe and stable transport. The vehicle also allows for the relief staffers to sit adjacent to the stretcher.

Thoughts About Toyota's Mobility Vehicle For The Games

Toyota seem to have outdone themselves. We've all seen some variants of people movers at airports and at golf courses. But this is really cool. To be able to configure seating on the go is brilliant. Toyota has put a lot of work in to these Accessible People Movers and we cannot wait to see them in action. Talk about a home-based manufacturer supporting it's nation.

And here we are, a few thousand kilometers away, still fighting about which of the Northern state should receive taxes from Formula 1. Pathetic!
