As per the latest car sales report of January 2019, the Honda City has become the top-selling sedan in India; beating the Hyundai Verna, Maruti Ciaz, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento. The Honda City has always been a favourite sedan (especially among the upper-middle-class) ever since its very first introduction back in 1998.

However, it is still not in the list of top 10 cars sold in the country; dominated by hatchbacks — check out the top-selling cars in India (January 2019).

Coming back to the sedans, here are the sales figures:

1. Honda City: 4855 units
2. Hyundai Verna: 3216 units
3. Maruti Ciaz: 2934 units
4. Skoda Rapid: 844 units
5. Volkswagen Vento: 562 units

From this list, you can also see that the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz sold considerably lesser than the Honda City. Even though being third is not a bad thing, it proves that Maruti Suzuki is the strongest in the lower price bracket (as observed from the model-wise sales report), but weaker in the upper range.

While the fourth-generation Honda City (sixth-generation in global markets) is performing really well, the sedan's new model is expected to arrive later this year. Reports suggest that the new Honda City will retain the current 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine, but with the addition of a mild-hybrid system. Yes, the next Honda City model will be electrified — here's what you should know.

In addition to this, some other sources claim that the upcoming Honda City will get an all-new 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine. We have a wait a bit more to find out if this is indeed true.

The current-generation Honda City comes in both petrol and diesel formats: 1.5-litre i-VTEC and 1.5-litre i-DTEC. The petrol engine makes 117bhp and 145Nm of torque while the diesel unit produces 99bhp and 200Nm. Both engines come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The higher variants of the petrol model get an optional six-step CVT unit as well.

As mentioned before, the Honda City has always been a popular choice among Indians. It came to the Indian market during a period in which sedans were not that common on the roads. For the same reason, the car has developed an image unmatchable by its rivals.
