Things To Consider When Buying A New Upcoming CNG Car In India
CNG or Compressed Natural Gas has come a long way in the last decade or so. It is among the most popular sources of alternative fuel, especially in India, and Maruti Suzuki has ensured it has a head-start to push the cause of CNG cars in the country. As an OEM, Maruti Suzuki has been offering CNG variants in their models for some time now, while most competitors have just forayed into offering CNG cars. At present, India's largest passenger car brand offers CNG variants across most of the segments including hatchbacks, sedans and MUVs.
How much sense does CNG make?
CNG's popularity as an alternate source for fuel in India is being preferred more than ever. With the growing demand for alternative fuel options in the country, CNG is rapidly gaining popularity in the passenger car segment.
This has worked in favor of Maruti Suzuki as it was the first in the country to offer CNG-powered cars. Over the years, they have vastly improved their CNG technology in cars across all aspects. Read more about it here.
Despite of that, there is still a fair amount of concerns among car buyers regarding the fuel, its usage, safety, and performance. If you are one of those, then here are some things that you ought to know about factory-fitted CNG cars in India: -
Performance
The development and refinement of CNG Technology over the years has allowed new cars to offer the level of performance that is optimum to drive on any kind on terrain. In fact, the development and technology of CNG-powered cars have come a long way since its launch. A case in point is Maruti Suzuki's S-CNG cars that are tested under extreme conditions. Furthermore, the car's powertrain, suspension as well as braking are calibrated to offer the desired level of performance and smooth driving experience with each drive.
These S-CNG cars come with dual interdependent ECUs. The ECUs continuously communicate with each other and provide inputs to the fuel injection system; thereby, offering consistent performance across different terrains.
Safety
S-CNG cars by Maruti Suzuki come with factory-fitted CNG. These are better than retrofitted CNG kits and are covered under standard warranty which can be extended up to 5 years. Retro-fitting a CNG kit voids warranty offered by manufacturers, and the performance and safety are major concerns while using an aftermarket CNG kit.
Cost
CNG Cars are more economical than petrol and diesel cars in long run. High mileage efficiency of CNG cars along with lower cost of CNG fuel helps customers to drive long distances in most efficient and economical way.
Warranty
As mentioned earlier, factory-fitted CNG-kits are better because they are brand certified. Cars with retro-fitted CNG-kits lose warranty once the kit is installed.
Maruti Suzuki is the pioneer when it comes to offering factory-fitted CNG cars in India. The company offers hassle-free registration, insurance, and an extendable warranty period of up to 5 years.
CNG Filling Stations
With a growing demand for CNG vehicles, the Indian government has been working towards setting up 10,000 new CNG stations in the country over the next 5 years (1). This initiative will further give thrust to CNG in new districts across the country.
As per a Nomura report (2), once the CNG infrastructure is in place, it is anticipated that by 2030, every second vehicle that will be sold will be powered by CNG. In totality, this will have a three-pronged effect - reduce crude oil imports, create up to 4,00,000 new jobs, and help reduce pollution levels within Indian cities. All of this leaves no doubt in our mind that CNG cars are indeed an important step towards cleaner mobility in India.
