Tesla Model Y Launch Date Revealed By Elon Musk
American electric carmaker Tesla will reveal the fourth model in its electric passenger vehicle lineup on March 14 in Los Angeles, California. The news of the launch of the new Tesla vehicle which will bear the name Model Y was revealed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk on his social platform of choice, Twitter.
In a series of tweets, Musk revealed that the all-new Model Y would be revealed at Tesla's Los Angeles Design Studio. Musk then went on to reveal more details about the upcoming vehicle, which will be Tesla's second SUV. According to Musk's tweets, the new Model Y "is about 10% bigger than Model 3, so will cost about 10% more & have slightly less range for the same battery."
Model Y like the Model X before it will be an SUV based on the sedan launched before it. In the case of the Model X, it was based on the Model S and in its most powerful guise is the fastest accelerating SUV in the world today, with a 0–60 miles/hr (0–96.5km/h) time of just 3.2 seconds. Model Y will be based on Tesla's most affordable car, the Model X.
However, the new Model Y, will not carry over the Model X's most distinctive design feature, its falcon-wing doors. Instead, Elon Musk revealed that the new Model Y will feature regular doors after he was asked on Twitter about the type of rear doors that would be fitted on the new car.
Like the Model X, Model Y too will be larger than the Model 3 on which it is based. According to tweet-happy Musk, the new Model X will be about 10 percent larger than the Model 3 which measures in at 4,690mm long, 1,930mm wide, and 1,440mm tall. Model 3 has a 2,880mm long wheelbase.
Due to the extra size of the new Model Y, Musk claims the new SUV will offer slightly less range when compared to its sedan sibling, as it will make use of the same battery packs currently offered with the Model 3. The Tesla Model 3 is currently offered with 50, 62, and 75kWh battery packs. The increase in size will also mean similar (10 percent) jump in terms of price, which would mean that the base Model Y will still start at somewhere under the $40,000 mark (Rs 28.32 lakh).
DriveSpark's Thoughts on the Upcoming Tesla Model Y
The Model Y could perhaps be the most important vehicle in Tesla's lineup till date with the world car market shifting towards SUVs. With an 'affordable' SUV in its lineup, Tesla Model Y could very well be the SUV that brings electric vehicles to the attention of the regular public.
