Starman May Land In India—Tesla Want To Be Here, This Year Or The Next
Sometime in 2008, a certain Mr. Elon Musk pointed out in a tweet that there were "some challenging government regulation" when asked about Tesla coming to India. 11 years later, there's a new bit of 'tweet' making the rounds. "Would love to be there this year. If not, definitely next! (heart) India (heart).
This comes almost ten months after Musk blamed restrictive policy for a delay in the automakers entry into the Indian Subcontinent.
While the Indian government has been wooing Tesla (through 2018) to set up a Giga Factory in India, Musk pointed out there were regulations that held Tesla back.
Tesla fired up a $5 billion factory at China in January. This is their first manufacturing facility outside of the United States. And it came to be after four years of planning. Tapping International markets will help Tesla recover from a potential dip in demand on home soil.
Tesla understand that India is a promising market for electric vehicles, but has been unable to break toward potential because of minimal support from the government for cleaner technology, and also, there is a major lack of charging stations for the electric market.
China, meanwhile, is some place else. According to Bloomberg NEF data, China has 1.35 million electric vehicles on the road as compared to Indias lowly level of 6000 electric vehicles. India also had a sad 425 publically available charging points at the end of 2017. Speculation is that this number will increase to 2,800 charging points by 2022.
Elon Musk and Tesla may be inclined toward India but only time will tell if that is meant to be. In addition, Tesla will have to price their cars under the Rs 10 lakh mark if they want to take over and dominate the Indian Subcontinent.
What We Think Of Tesla's Want To Be In India
Dear Mr. Musk, we hope Tesla makes it to India. We also hope you meet little to no resistance with the Indian government (we can't promise though). India needs to clean up her act and make decisive moves towards a greener future. Tesla can help, but this is India Mr. Musk, every one need be fed.
