Tata's Three Cylinder Diesel Engines To Be Shelved — Tigor And Tiago Do Not Comply With BS-VI

Tata's 1.05 litre, three-cylinder diesel engines do not meet BS-VI norms and are set to go off the production line on the 31st of March.

Tata Tigor

According to Autocar India, the Tigor sedan and the Tiago hatchback will be available only in petrol variants starting the 1st of April 2019.

Tata Motors said that the existing engines will not meet BS-VI norms which come into force next month, the demand for diesel variants were dropping and the currently do not justify costs for developing newer engines. An average of 1,114 units of the Tiago diesel, and 360 units of the Tigor diesel variants were sold through April 2018 and January 2019, accounting for 14 percent of overall Tiago and 15 percent of Tigor sales, respectively.

Tata Tiago

Autocar India spoke with Rajendra Petkar, the Chief Technology Officer of Tata Motors, at the Geneva Motor Show 2019. Petkar said, "Around 80 percent of the demand in this segment is for petrol variants and thus the additional investment required does not make a viable plan".

The BS-VI norms may see a drop in smaller cars with diesel engines, although automakers are likely to continue diesel variants on mid-size sedans and SUVs. The Tata Tigor and the Tiago are powered by the same 1.05-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that cranks out maximum power of 69bhp at 4,000rpm, and 140Nm of torque at 1,800rpm. The turbo-diesel engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The price ranges from Rs 6,31,667 up to Rs 7,51,758 for the diesel variants of the Tigor sedan, and Rs 5,00,369 and Rs 6,49,137 for the Tiago hatchback diesel trims.

DriveSpark's Thoughts About The Tigor And Tiago Diesel Variants Being Shelved

The are not too many diesel variants of the Tigor and the Tiago on the road. Personally, I've seen more petrol variants on the roads today. Low demand for these three cylinders are pushing them out of production and that could be the reason why Tata Motors may or may not work on a small diesel engine for these models in the future.
