Tata Sumo Discontinued In India: Company Stops Production Of SUV After 25 Years Of Sales
Tata Motors has discontinued the sales of the Sumo in the Indian market. The Tata Sumo production has now been discontinued with the SUV not being available at any of the company dealerships across the country.
The Tata Sumo first went on sale back in 1994 and has been in production for over 25 years. The company finally pulled the plug on its production as the SUV fails to meet the stringent crash test and safety norms in the country.
Tata Motors had no plans of updating the Sumo SUV in the Indian market for the future. The Tata Sumo failed to comply with both the AIS 145 safety norms and the BNVSAP (Bharath New Vehicle Safety Assessment Programme) in India.
The Tata Sumo was an extremely popular model from the brand in the Indian market. The Tata Sumo brought in Volume sales in the MPV/SUV segment for the company. The last iteration of the model came in the form of the Sumo Gold.
The Tata Sumo Gold was priced between Rs 7.39 lakh to Rs 8.77 lakh, ex-showroom. However, it didn't offer any of the latest features, technology or the safety equipment, which are available in almost every car sold in India today.
The Tata Sumo Gold was powered by a BS-IV 3.0-litre diesel engine. It produced 85bhp and 250Nm of torque, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox as standard. The car was popular not only among private customers but also fleet operators as a rugged and functional 7-seater model.
Tata has clearly shown no signs of bringing any sort of update to the Sumo, which does translate to it being discontinued for good. However, the company has not released any official statement regarding the same.
Thoughts On The Tata Sumo Discontinuation In India
The Tata Sumo was on sale in the Indian market for 25 years. The MPV/SUV brought in a good number of sales for the company and also received a number of updates during its lifecycle. However, with the country moving towards more stringent regulations, Tata Motors has decided to discontinue the product in India.
Similar to this, many other carmakers have also discontinued various other products in the Indian market. This includes Maruti Suzuki which discontinued the Omni and the Gypsy recently.
