Tata Motors To Set-Up 300 EV Fast-Charging Stations Before 2021
Tata Motors has revealed plans to set up 300 fast charging stations for electric vehicles in five major cities. Tata Motors has associated with Tata Power for this initiative and is set to complete the installation before April 2021.
This news comes just a couple of days after reports of Tata working on a long-range Tata Tigor EV emerged. The electric vehicle industry is growing with every passing day with new manufacturers entering the segment and older manufacturers making announcements about new products.
Yet, it is still at a nascent stage thanks to the lack of infrastructure and fast-charging capabilities. One of the major grouses with electric vehicles is the lack of range and the lack of equipment to charge them up quickly.
Refuelling a petrol or diesel-powered vehicles takes not more than a few minutes and then the car gets a range of a few hundred kilometres. Electric cars on the other hand take hours to charge and the range is still not too great.
This is especially true with budget electric cars like the Mahindra eVerito and the Tata Tigor EV. Well, Tata Motors seems to be solving this problem slowly. The Tata Tigor EV has been around for a while now.
However, the Tata Tigor isn't available for private buyers, this is because the primary requirement of an individual buyer is a long range and the Tata Tigor EV currently does not offer that.
The Tata Tigor EV has been made available only for fleet operators. Tata is now working on an update that will make it feasible for private buyer too, as the range improves by a large extent. The Tata Tigor EV is currently powered by a 16.3kWh battery pack that drives a 3-Phase AC Induction motor that has an output of around 39.4bhp and 105Nm.
Since it is only for commercial operators, the top speed has currently been restricted to 80km/h. The electric notchback currently has a range of 142 kilometres on a single charge. With the update, Tata Motors will push the range to over 200 kilometres and the top speed to over 100km/h. There are no other details available at the moment.
It seems like Tata Motors is not happy with just providing a good car. The company now plans to get infrastructure up and running. Tata Motors and Tata Power have come together to install 300 EV charging across the cities of Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Hyderabad.
The plan has already been actioned as the company inaugurated seven of the fast-charging stations in Pune last week. 45 more such chargers will be installed across the other four cities over the next two months. These fast-chargers will help customers juice up their car quickly so that they can be on the move for a longer period.
Thoughts On Tata Setting-Up 300 Fast-Charging Stations Across Five Major Cities
Tata Motors has big plans for the EV market in India. It was just last month that the company announced that it would launch four new electric cars over the next 18 months. The company is expected to launch the Tata Nexon EV and the Altroz EV soon. In such a situation, it is no surprise that Tata has decided to set up charging infrastructure, because its upcoming EVs would need such fast-chargers.
