The SUV segment in India is bursting with options. While the full-size SUV segment has seen consistent sales, the Compact SUV and Mid-Size SUV segment has seen immense growth. Despite the evident slowdown in the automotive industry, the Kia Seltos and MG Hector have received thousands of bookings.

The Tata Nexon and Tata Harrier too are seeing consistent sales. Hence, there is no surprise in Tata Motors seeing more potential in yet another SUV. The Tata Blackbird has been in the making for a while now.

Earlier this year, reports emerged regarding the development of the Tata Blackbird. The Tata Blackbird is intended to fill the gap between the Tata Nexon and the Tata Harrier. Seems like the development happened at a fast pace as the SUV has been spotted while on test.

There were rumours of the Tata Blackbird being a rebadged version of the Chery Tiggo 5X. However, these rumours were later rubbished when it was confirmed that the Tata Blackbird will be based on the ALFA platform.

ALFA is Tata Motors' latest modular platform and the upcoming Tata Altroz hatchback is the first vehicle to be based on the new platform. The platform can underpin vehicles measuring between 3.7 and 4.3-metres in length.

The Tata Nexon measures 4-metres and the Tata Harrier measures 4.6-metres in length, hence it is safe to assume that the Tata Blackbird will be just about 4.3-metres-long. The spy pictures of the Tata Blackbird posted by Rushlane reveals a few design details of the SUV.

Tata's signature split headlamp design is visible up front. The LED DRLs are at a higher position while the headlamps are placed lower down in the bumper. A bulky body design and stylish alloy wheels can also be seen in the images.

However, it will be upgraded to push out more power and torque to suit the needs of the segment. The Tata Nexon is powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol or a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both engines push out a maximum power output of 110bhp and while the diesel has a peak torque output of 260Nm, the petrol variant has to make do with 170Nm.

We expect the torque and power figures to increase by a small margin when these engines are plonked into the Tata Blackbird. Transmission options will include the same 6-speed manual gearbox and 6-speed AMT from the Tata Nexon. The drivetrain will be upgraded to BS-VI emissions norms before the SUV is launched in India.

Thoughts On Tata Blackbird SUV Spied Testing In India

The Tata Blackbird will compete with the likes of the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta. Going by the looks of it, the SUV seems almost production-ready. Tata Motors might just showcase it at the 2020 Indian Auto Expo.

Tata Motors is one of the many manufacturers betting big on SUVs and we certainly hope it pays off. Tata Motors is going to launch the Blackbird to slot in between the Nexon and Harrier. The Indian auto-giant will also launch the Tata Cassini which is an eight-seater version of the Tata Harrier.
