Tamil Nadu has announced a new policy to promote the use of electric vehicles in the state. With the new policy in place, the state government also plans to become the EV hub of India.
The state government hopes to raise Rs 50,000 crore from investors for the EV space. The new policy is aimed at boosting innovation in EV space as well and promote any inventions in EV space.
The new policy will help create proper charging infrastructure for electric vehicles with adequate charging point network across the state. Also, the policy would open up new employment opportunities for over 1.50lakh positions.
According to the new policy the state issues tax exemptions, waivers and fiscal concession schemes for electric vehicles. The scheme include 100% road tax exemption and waiver on registration fees on two-wheelers and private cars, till December 30, 2022. The incentivised schemes towards EVs will be present for the next 10 years, promoting the initiative.
The state government also wants to convert all the rickshaws to electric-powered vehicles. To support the initiative, the government will be issuing a waiver on permit fees and 100 per cent road tax exemption for all-electric rickshaws till December 30, 2022. Taxis, tourist cars, fleet aggregators and LCVs will all come under this scheme as well.
Tamil Nadu will also convert 5 per cent of their existing fleet of buses to electric-powered buses every year. It will also set up charging stations along the route and at the bus terminals, for smoother transition to electric buses.
The biggest challenge would be to support charging infrastructure to motorists choosing electric vehicles over gasoline-powered vehicles. To tackle this government plans to place a charging station every 25km on either side of the highway.
It will partner with public sector units to set up charging infrastructure at malls, cinema halls, hospitals, government offices, parking lots; among other public hotspots.
The State is planning to concentrate on its six major cities at first for EV transition. This list of cities include Chennai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Salem and Tirunelveli. Tamil Nadu plans to achieve all-electric transportation with rickshaws and cabs replaced by EVs within 10 years.
Mr Mahesh Babu, CEO, Mahindra Electric, said,
"We welcome the draft policy by Tamil Nadu, which is both progressive and comprehensive in nature. It outlines clear adoption of strategies for last-mile connectivity through three-wheelers and shared mobility by four-wheelers."
"We appreciate the demand-side incentives provided by the government like road tax exemption, zero permit fees, registration charges waiver for three-wheelers. We are looking forward to the implementation of this draft policy soon. Mahindra is ready with products like the Treo for helping the state to achieve its EV adoption goal," he added.
