Renault Duster Scores Four Stars At Latin NCAP Crash Tests: Details
The newest version of the Renault Duster has scored 4-stars for adult occupant safety, and 3-stars for child occupant safety at the Latin NCAP crash tests. The SUV is the sold as the Dacia in some international markets, and is manufactured at Colombia, Brazil, and Romania.
The Latin NCAP noted the Duster’s structure was unstable during the front crash test and could not withstand too much of a beating. The SUV’s structure showed ‘relevant intrusion’ during the side impact test, and the NCAP said it did not expect this from a new version of the vehicle.
The unit tested was a Romanian manufactured version that was imported to Chile. The Latin NCAP will test locally made versions when available.
The Latin NCAP found that the child test-dummies impacting their heads impacting against the interior of the vehicle. which could mean a possibility of injuries in the even of a crash. Safety features on the Duster include standard dual front airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ISOFIX child seat anchors, and top tether anchorages.
Renault has not launched this version of the Duster in India. The SUV that was launched as the facelift of the Duster. This generation of Renault Dusters had failed a Global NCAP crash test in 2017.
The facelift version of the Renault Duster features 25 changes including new headlamps, a new grille, bumpers, wheels, and colour options among others. The interiors feature revised air conditioning vents, and an updated infotainment system that is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible.
The Renault Duster for the Indian market continues to feature BS-IV complaint petrol and diesel engines. The 1.5-liter petrol engine produces makes 104bhp of power and 142Nm of torque, and is available either with a five-speed manual or a CVT.
The 1.5-liter diesel engine is available in two states of tune – a 110bhp and 245Nm with a six-speed manual or an AMT, and an 85bhp engine that makes 200Nm of torque. This comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
Renault is expected to sell only BS-VI compliant petrol engines once the norms kick in on 1 April 2020. Aging engines warrant expensive modifications to comply with the BS-VI norms, making it economically inefficient.
In related news, the Indian government has made crash tests mandatory for all cars sold in the country. The new Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) has started testing popular vehicles and the results are expected to be released soon.
Thoughts About The Duster’s Latin NCAP Results
Not a very safe car for children we think. Honestly, we’re surprised that the Duster scored a 3-star rating for children safety. The Duster is one of the best selling SUV (for Renault) in the country. While the ratings do nothing to make the vehicle more valuable, we’re unsure if the Indian consumer is truly concerned about safety. Price above safety is India’s thing.
