Renault To Discontinue Diesel Engines From April 2020: Will Discontinue Lodgy From Product Portfolio
Renault India is said to discontinue the production of diesel-powered models from its lineup in 2020. According to reports from ET Auto, Renault will discontinue production of diesel engines once the new BS6 emission norms are implemented in India.
The French brand confirmed that from April 2020, the company will sell only petrol-powered models in the Indian market.
Renault currently offers their 1.5-litre K9K diesel engines on the Duster, Lodgy Captur models. However, with the introduction of stringent emission norms, the company does not find it feasible to update its diesel units.
Along with the discontinuation of the diesel engines, Renault has also confirmed that they will suspend production and sales of the Lodgy MPV in the Indian market. The Renault Lodgy which is currently powered by the 1.5-litre K9K diesel unit will be discontinued entirely from the brand's portfolio.
Venkatram Mamillapalle, Country CEO, Renault India Operations, told ET Auto that the company has no plans of getting into diesel engines. All future vehicles from the brand will be powered by petrol engines, including the premium Captur SUV. He also confirmed that the Lodgy production will end and that there are no plans to renovate or update the model.
The current 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine which currently powers the Lodgy comes in the form of a 1461cc four-cylinder unit. It produces 108bhp and 245Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.
Apart from discontinuing the production of diesel engines and the Lodgy, Renault also confirmed that their latest sub-4 metre compact-MPV will be updated to comply with the BS-VI emission norms soon. Renault could launch the BS6 Triber MPV in the Indian market sometime in January 2020.
Mamillapalle also confirmed that there will be a slight revision in prices of the current models once the BS6 emission norms are implemented in the Indian market. Renault recently started exporting the Triber MPV to the South African market. The company shipped out its first batch consisting of 600 units of the Triber — here are more details.
Thoughts On The Renault Lodgy & Diesel Engines Being Discontinued
Renault is moving away from the production of diesel engines in the Indian market. This might seem like a good move from the French brand as the updates for the diesel engine will require more investment than for petrol units.
The Renault Lodgy, on the other hand, has been struggling for sales in the country and doesn't make any sense for Renault to update the model.
