Renault BS-VI turbo-petrol engines confirmed for India. The new engines would be featured in the next-generation Duster, Captur and the Lodgy. We expect the new engines to debut with the launch of second-generation Renault Duster.

Renault is expected to introduce two turbo-petrol engines in total: a 1.0-litre engine producing 100bhp of power and 160Nm of torque and a 1.3-litre engine with two states-of-tune. The lower spec produces 130bhp and 240Nm of torque while the higher-spec churns out 150bhp and 250Nm of peak torque.

The company had earlier confirmed that they will discontinue diesel engines after the implementation of BS-VI emission norms. The new turbo-petrol engines are likely to replace the current diesel units on specific models in the company's lineup.

Renault's current diesel engine option comes in the form of a 1.5-litre unit, again with two states-of-tune. The lower tuned spec produces 85bhp and 200Nm of torque. The higher-tuned version churns out 110bhp and 245Nm of torque.

The lower-spec version is available only on the Duster and Lodgy offerings. The higher-spec version, however, is offered on all three models including the Captur.

The Renault Lodgy is currently offered with only a diesel engine, which will be discontinued soon. However, Renault is yet to confirm whether or not the Lodgy will receive the petrol engine or be discontinued entirely from the lineup.

We expect the new higher state of tune turbo-petrol engine, with good torque figures would be an appropriate replacement to power the MPV. Renault also has a 1.5-litre petrol engine which produces 106bhp and 142Nm of torque, powering most of the models in the company's range.

However, Renault has replaced the 1.5-litre petrol engine, with the new 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit that is currently powering the Euro-spec Duster and new-generation Micra. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic as an option in the company's Euro-spec models.

The new India-bound 1.3-litre engine from Renault was jointly developed by the alliance partners (Nissan, Mitsubishi, Renault) and Daimler. The new 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines comply with Euro-6 emission norms, which are slightly stricter than the upcoming India's BS-VI emission norms.

Thoughts About The New BS-VI Turbo Petrol Engine From Renault

The new turbo-petrol engine line-up from Renault, have good power and torque figures. The new engines will be a better alternative to diesel engines, so that the company does not have to discontinue any models from their line-up. With upcoming BS-VI emission norms, major automotive manufacturers have confirmed that they are not taking their smaller capacity diesel engines forward, and will not make it BS-VI complaint.

However, to tackle this Maruti and Hyundai are concentrating on adding CNG variants to their model line-up, as an alternative to the diesel variants. While Mahindra and Tata are looking to develop electric power trains for their range of models. The petrol-hybrid powertrains are in the mix as well.
