Piaggio Launches Ape City Plus — Enters Three-Wheeler Passenger Segment
In a bid to expand its commercial passenger vehicle fleet, Piaggio India has launched the all new Ape City Plus. This marks Piaggio entering the mid-body three-wheeler segment. Piaggio aims to improve last mile connectivity with this move. The company feels this will boost shared mobility in the country.
According to NDTV Auto, he new Ape City Plus has been built ground up, and has been developed at Piaggio's research and development facilities in Italy and India. The three-wheeler is said to be available in four fuel variants - Petrol, Diesel, LPG and CNG.
Piaggio says the all new Ape City Plus offers best-in-class space, power and torque. The three-wheeler also features step-less entry, and extra luggage space. The large design ensure improved legroom and headroom for passengers, and also allows for the driver to have a more comfortable ride.
The design language is slightly different to other products in the market and Piaggio feels this will attract a bigger customer base. They feel the numbers will make the difference. The new Ape City Plus feature a ground clearance of 197mm (highest in segment), the wheelbase stands at 1920mm, and the overall length measures 2,880mm. The width and height are 1,435mm and 1,970mm.
The all new Piaggio Ape City Plus features a new three-valve 230cc petrol engine that produces 10bhp of power and 17.51Nm of peak torque. The LPG version offers slightly more power at 11bhp and 20.37Nm of torque.
The Ape City plus diesel variant produces 8bhp of power and 21Nm of peak torque. All variants come paired with to a 4-speed manual transmission. Suspension duties are handled by hydraulic telescopic forks at the front and the rear, and drum brakes take care of the stopping power.
Piaggio says the new Ape City Plus offers a lower cost of ownership as compared to other products that are available in the market. In addition, they claims the CNG variant returns 40km per kg, while the LPG version returns 22kmpl. The Ape City+ diesel offers a mileage of 40kmpl.
Piaggio India will also be offering a 36 month/1 lakh kilometer warranty on the Ape City+ petrol along with eight free services (redeemable during the first year of ownership). The diesel variant comes with a 42 month/1.2 lakh kilometer warranty with five free services.
The new Piaggio Ape City Plus is priced at Rs 1.71 lakh for the petrol version, and Rs 1.92 lakh for the CNG variant. As always, prices mentioned are ex-showroom (India).
Thoughts About The New Piaggio City Ape Plus
The all new Ape City Plus looks quite different that the other commercial passenger three-wheelers available in the market. The Ape Plus reminds up to the infamous tuk-tuk from Thailand. Most rickshaw drivers are in the process of upgrading their three-wheelers to larger and more spacious models. We're sure Piaggio is hoping that their three-wheeler will do well in the Indian markets.
