Osmania University Students Build Formula Race Car From Scratch — Powered By A 390cc Engine?
For the first time in the history of Osmania University, the engineering students have built a formula race car called the XLR8.
The concept of building this project car started last year in November. The team was given a budget of Rs 10 Lakh for design and development. However, the students (25 of them) over there were so passionate that hey built the car in a record-breaking time of just four months.
The car was taken by the Team to the Budh International Circuit which is located in Greater Noida for participating in the National Level Super Racing Competition. The XLR8 was build according to the SAE design standards so that it could get approved for racing.
On asking the students they said, "We are a group of 25, passionate, mechanical engineering students from Osmania University, enthusiastic to build a formula car. Grease on our hands and sparks from metal on metal. This is what we came here for; this is what we live for."
The students built the race car from scratch. The vehicle is powered by a 390cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke, petrol engine (which we think is from the 390 Duke). It can reach a top speed of 170km/h and weighs just 240kgs.
The SAE stated, "Students are required to design and fabricate a formula race car with the inclusion of innovations that can make formula cars more efficient. As of now, the team has finished designing the frame of the vehicle, and further analysis which demands more optimization over the primary structure is being processed."
Faculty advisor, Dr V Uma Maheshwar said the design and development work was taken up in February 2019 and in a record time of four months, students fabricated the racing car. "For the first time, the students of OUCE have designed and fabricated a Formula Racing Car," he said.
Thoughts On The XLR8 Race Car
It is really good to see that the people, especially, students are taking part in such things. Motorsport has become a big deal in our country now and there are a lot of people to supp[ort that. We wish luck to all the students taking part in such initiatives and may the best man win.
