The Ballisitic Nissan GT-R Nismo Is More Bonkers Than Ever

Japanese carmaker Nissan has revealed the updated GT-R Nismo sports car at the 2019 New York Auto Show. The new Nissan GT-R Nismo spiorts car has been updates in terms of its looks (inspired by the GT3 racer) is over 30 kilogrammes lighter than the regular GT-R and has more power on offer as well.

Under the bonnet of the new Nissan GT-R Nismo is the Japanese carmaker's 3.8-litre, 24 valve twin-turbocharged engine — each handcrafted by its own takumi — now benefits from an exclusive turbocharger design taken directly from the GT3 race car. This means that the GT-R Nismo cranks out 592bhp and 652Nm of torque. The VR38DETT engine sends all of its power to all four wheels via a revised 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Nissan claims that the revised 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox now features a refined 'R mode' that not only shifts faster but also optimizes gear selection, especially when exiting corners. This states the maker of the manic Godzilla enhances the feeling of acceleration and deceleration on both road and track. The revised gearbox also features adaptive shift control which is programmed to adapt to the user's driving style, allowing drivers to drive on both road and track without having to manually switch between modes.

Nissan has also put the GT-R Nismo on a diet. The 2020 Model Year Nissan GT-R Nismo is 30.5 kilogrammes lighter than the regular car. The Nissan GT-R Nismo comes fitted with carbon ceramic disc brakes (410 mm up front and 390 mm at the rear) which are lighter than the regular steel brakes and also provide better braking performance, bringing Godzilla to a halt in double quick time.

Other changes include a titanium exhaust system, and 20-inch Rays ligheight alloy wheels, which are exclujsive to the car. The wheels are fitted with specially developed Dunlop tyres that feature a wider tread and fewer grooves which helps improve stability while cornering and also help with steering response.

Nissan has also used a lot of carbon-fibre on the Nismo with the bumpers, side-skirts, bonnet, roof and boot-lid all made from the lighweight yet strong material. The front fenders look like the ones on the GT3 race car and feature scalloped vents that Nissan claims funnel hot air away from the engine bay and while also helping to improve the downforce of the sports car.

Nissan also released a special GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition version of the Nissan GT-R at the New York Auto Show which brings with it a two-tone livery that pays homage to Skyline race cars from the 1970s. There are three colour options on offer, Pearl White with red stripes, Super Silver with white stripes and Bayside Blue with white stripes, the last of which hasn't been seen on a GT-R since the iconic R34 GT-R from the 1990s.
