New Ssangyong Korando SUV To Debut Soon — Could Preview Next-Gen Mahindra XUV 500

Mahindra is said to be working on a new-generation model of the XUV 500 for the Indian market. Various reports now suggest that the new Mahindra XUV 500, which is expected to be introduced in 2020 could be based on the Ssangyong Korando.

The new Ssangyong Korando is scheduled to make its global debut at the upcoming 2019 Geneva Motor Show in March. The 2020 Mahindra XUV 500 could borrow design cues and other specific details from the Korando SUV.

Mahindra which owns the Korean brand has already introduced their flagship Alturas G4 in the market, based on the fourth-generation Ssangyong Rexton. The Indian brand is now preparing to launch the XUV300 in the market, also based on a Ssangyong SUV (Ssangyong Tivoli).

The new Ssangyong Korando once debuted, will be placed above the Tivoli in the brand's international lineup. The Korando SUV will use the same X100 platform as seen on the Tivoli. The same platform will also be brought forward to the Mahindra XUV 300. The Alturas G4 and the Marazzo MPV, on the other hand, use a ladder frame chassis.

The Ssangyong Korando will further be based on the brand's e-SIV EV concept, which debuted at last year's Geneva Motor Show. In terms of power units, the new Mahindra XUV 500 could feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It will also come with a new 2.0-litre diesel engine churning out 180bhp.

This new diesel engine has already been confirmed on the next-generation Thar; in a lower state-of-tune (140bhp). Both engines will further be compliant with the upcoming BS-VI emission norms as well.

The Mahindra XUV 500 has always been a popular 5-seater SUV offering from the brand. However, with stiff competition in the market, the company might even introduce a 7-seater version as well.

Thoughts On The New 2020 Mahindra XUV 500

The Mahindra XUV 500 is expected to be introduced in the Indian market sometime in 2020. The new SUV will comply with all the upcoming safety, crash test and emission norms, starting from April 2019. Once launched in India, the Mahindra XUV 500 will go against the likes of the recently launched Tata Harrier and the upcoming MG Hector.
