MG To Launch 4 SUVs In India After Hector — The Right Move?
Chinese-owned British carmaker Morris Garages (MG) is all set to launch its first-ever vehicle in India in the coming months in the form of the Hector SUV. The British carmaker has also confirmed that it will be concentrating on the SUV segment and that it will be launching 4 more SUVs onto the roads of India in the 24 months after the Hector's arrival.
The Hector will be the first SUV from MG to hit the roads in India and will be followed onto our roads by an all-electric SUV, which is expected to be the eZS that was was unveiled last year at the 2018 Guangzhou Motor Show in China. The MG eZS is powered by a single electric motor that kicks out 148bhp and has a claimed range of 430-kilometres as per the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The eZS is expected to be first imported as a CBU into India when it is launched before the end of 2019 and MG will later assemble the electric SUV at its parent company SAIC's facility in Halol, Gujarat.
The MG eZS is expected to be followed by a 7-seater version of the Hector. The 7-seater Hector is expected to take on the Tata Buzzard that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last month, while its smaller sibling is expected to battle the likes of the Harrier and the Jeep Compass.
Not much is known about MG's other two SUV offerings which are expected to arrive before mid-2021. MG though has been testing a smaller SUV in India, believed to be the Baojun (another carmaker owned by SAIC) 510. Considering that the Hector and the Baojun 530 are nearly identical, the Baojun 510, could very well be the small(er) SUV to bear the MG badge in India. The compact SUV is expected to take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and the Renault Captur.
The final member of MG's five SUV barrage into India is currently unknown but it has been speculated that this SUV could be the largest one to bear the MG badge in India. The large SUV could be based on MG's X-Motion SUV that was unveiled last year in Beijing. The large SUV from MG is expected to take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Mahindra Alturas G4.
