India-bound MG eZS Electric SUV Showcased At Bangkok Motor Show

Chinese-owned British carmaker Morris Garages (MG) has showcased its all-electric SUV at the 2019 Bangkok Motor Show. The eZS is expected to be MG's second offering in India and should arrive by the fourth quarter of 2019 as a direct import from China.

The MG eZs was first revealed late last year at the 2018 Guangzhou Motor Show in China last year. The MG eZS electric SUV is powered by a single electric motor which produces 148bhp.

The motor is connected to a lithium-ion battery pack that allows the electric eZS SUV to go 430-kilometres on a single charge, as per the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). MG claims that the eZS can recharge 80 per cent of its battery pack in around 30 minutes.

The model showcased at the Bangkok Motor Show was the left-hand-drive variant from China, which is currently the largest market for electric vehicles in the world and also the home of MG's parent company SAIC Motor Corporation Limited. When the new MG eZS does come to India, it is expected to arrive as a direct import from China via the CKD route. This will allow MG to assemble the zero-emissions SUV in India, which in turn keep the price tag competitive.

The show car at Bangkok is a proper production-spec car and looks exactly like the regular fossil fuel powered ZS SUV from MG as the charging port is hidden behind the MG badge up front. Inside, the MG eZS features a rather normal looking setup, though the JLR-style rotary dial for the gear selector, helps differentiate the EV from its petrol and diesel-powered siblings.

The Morris Garages eZS is expected to be the second offering from the British carmaker in India as MG has confirmed that the second car in its lineup for the sub-continent will be an all-electric SUV. The MG eZS will follow the Hector SUV into India, with the latter expected to arrive in May. The new MG eZS is expected to compete with the Hyundai Kona when it arrives in India. The Kona is expected to arrive in India in the second half of 2019 and it will be the first-ever pure electric SUV to officially go on sale in India.
