MG Aims At Selling Up To 3,000 Units Of The All-Electric ZS SUV In India
China owned MG Motor is aiming to sell up to 3,000 units of the soon-to-be-launched ZS electric SUV in India. The company wants to offer more than what is being offered in the electric segment, and also plans to unveil the all new ZS Electric next month.
Mr Rajeev Chaba, the President and Managing Director at MG Motor India, said that the company was working towards developing an ecosystem around electric mobility in India. The company is tying up with partners for charging infrastructure and battery management, and is also exploring a subscription model for buyers.
MG Motor India also feels that while manufacturers are making an effort to go electric and are being supported by the government's FAME schemes, the scarcity of charging infrastructure and higher pricing of the electric vehicles are keeping customers away.
India does not have a mass electric segment at the moment and that is why MG Motors India is aiming for just up to 3,000 units to be sold. MG feels they have to be cautious with pricing the ZS SUV, as this is the element that plays the biggest part. It can make the model a commercial success or an absolute failure.
In addition, MG also knows that they need a balance between quality of the product and the price of the product. The industry is of the opinion that the Indian consumer will not pay for over-engineered products.
No information is available about the ZS's official launch, however we know that the company's all electric will be priced around the Rs 25 lakh mark.
MG Motor India will also be able to leverage the strengths of its parent company, SAIC Motor, that is based out of China. SAIC sold 82,000 all-electric units within the fist half of 2019, allowing for a year-on-year increase of 42 percent.
SAIC is the only Chinese auto manufacturer that builds electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and fuel cells. The ZS will also have its battery manufactured at the state-of-the-art SAIC-CATL battery manufacturing facility at Liyang, China.
MG Motors is hopeful of setting up a battery manufacturing facility in India within the next two years. The new facility will cater to production of the MG ZS electric vehicle, and also other electric products that MG launches in the Indian market.
MG Motor also feels that the sales for the will remain unaffected once the electric is launched. They feel that both the SUVs have their own buyers and neither model will cannibalize sales from the other.
Thoughts About The 3,000 Unit Target
We're sure MG will manage to sell over 3,000 units of the ZS all electric. Hyundai's all electric, the Kona, hit 300 units within three months of launch, making it cross over half its yearly sales target with nine months to spare. MG's advantage is that the ZS is bigger and more spacious than the Kona, and we know it will priced about the same. We think they should increase their targets.
