Mercedes Launches 5G Network For Auto Production — Streamlining At The Speed Of Light

German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes Benz has set up the world's first 5G network, specifically for automobile production. The project extends over 20,000 square metres, and the 5G mobile communications standard is being implemented in to production for the first time ever. Mercedes says that the experience gained here will be incorporated into plans for the future, and at it's other plant as well.

The use of the 5G network technology allows Mercedes-Benz Cars optimize existing production processes at its plant with the help of new features. These include data linking, and product tracking on the assembly line. The company feels that a separate own network allows for all processes to be made more robust, and if necessary, adapted at short notice in to prevailing market requirements.

The mobile communications standard links production systems and machines together thereby supporting the efficiency and precision of the production process. One more benefit of using a local 5G network is that sensitive production data does not have to be shared third party vendors.

The enormous amounts of data required for various test scenarios involving vehicles of the future can be processed very quickly via a 'data shower'. The 5G mobile communications standard allows for fast data transmission, and extremely low latency, making the whole process highly reliable.

Jorg Burzer, a member of the Divisional Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Cars, Production and Supply Chain, said, "With the 'Factory 56', we are not only building the smart car production of the future but also putting in place the world's first 5G mobile network in a vehicle assembly factory."

"As the inventor of the car, we are taking digitalization in production to a whole new level. With the installation of a local 5G network, the networking of all production systems and machines in the Mercedes-Benz Cars factories will become even smarter and more efficient in the future. This opens up completely new production opportunities," he added.

Markus Haas, CEO, Telefonica Deutschland, said, "We are starting the 5G era for Germany as an industrial location and are building the most modern mobile network for one of the most modern automobile factories in the world. As a telecommunications provider and partner for the industry, we have extensive experience in private networks and modern 5G solutions, which we are now contributing to the cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Cars."

Short distance are required in order to make use of the entire spectrum of the 5G. This is possible only via a local infrastructure that is being implemented across 'Factory 56'. Once the 5Gsystems are in place, Factory 56 will be the most futuristic and modern car production facilities in the world.

In addition to being flexible and green, this facility uses intelligent and digitalized technologies to bring out the full potential of Industry 4.0. Machines and systems, for example, are closely networked with each other.

The assembly lines and materials-handling technology are compatible with the Internet of Things. In order to achieve this, the 'Factory 56' has been equipped with several 5G small-cell indoor antennas and a central 5G hub.

Thoughts About Mercedes Setting Up The World's First 5G Network For Auto Production

Very interesting. We seldom think of, or remember that manufacturers use a lot of tech at their production and assembly lines. High end tech like the 5G network Mercedes has implemented will definitely reduce wastage, increase output, and streamline an already fantastic process.
