Mercedes-AMG To Go Hybrid From 2021 — Electricity To Save The Rumbling V8
AMG, the performance arm of German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz is set to electrify its high-performance lineup from 2021 states a new report by Road and Track. The publication states that Mercedes-AMG will start using the 48V mild-hybrid setup recently seen on the new Mercedes GLS SUV that was revealed at the 2019 New York Auto Show.
The details of the impending electrification of the AMG lineup was revealed to Raod and Track by the boss of the high-perfromance arm of Mercedes. Tobias Moers the CEO of Mercedes-AMG told the publication that the development of the mild hybrid setup on the new Mercedes GLS 580 was done by Merc's performance arm, which is best known for its rumbling V8s.
The Mercedes GLS 580 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine aided by a mild-hybrid system that uses a 48-volt electric motor on the crankshaft. The twin-turbo AMG V8 engine produces 482bhp and 700Nm of torque with the motor adding another 22bhp and 250Nm of torque for brief periods under acceleration.
Moers stated that AMG had used the mild hybrid setup for its GLE & GLS 63 models before it was bought to the mainstream GLS 580 model. Moers then went on to tell the publication that the mild hybrid setup was the future of AMG's performance vehicles in the future with every car and SUV from the performance mentalists at Affalterbach would be electrified from 2021. He said that electrification was the key to bringing the performance cars into the future stating that the segment would feature the highest share of electrified powertrains.
Mercedes-AMG first started using electrified powertrains with its 53 series of new cars. In the 53 Series, Mercedes-AMG makes use of a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine that is paired with a 48-volt-driven Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and an electric compressor to balance out the turbo lag. The new GLS 580 only makes use of the ISG.
AMG's next big project is the One Hypercar, which will be a showpiece for the brand's electrification efforts. The Mercedes-AMG One uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged Formula One engine paired with three electric motors (one on each front wheel and the final unit on the crankshaft) along with an electric turbocharger
With AMG finally putting its V12 engine to rest thanks to stricter emission norms, Moers noted that the next 65 lineup of vehicles from AMG could feature the marque's twin-turbo V8 engine along with an electric motor driving the front wheels.
Hopefully, alll the changes will mean we'll hear the growling AMG V8 for quite a few more years. One engine though that is not expected to be electrified anytime soon is AMG's turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four powerplant which will make over 400bhp in the upcoming Mercedes-AMG A45 S.
