McLaren 600LT Spider Unveiled — Likes To Eat Pista
McLaren Automotive has officially unveiled the new 600LT Spider. The convertible iteration of the recently-introduced McLaren 600LT is the fifth car from the iconic British supercar manufacturer to carry the LongTail (LT) tag; inspired by the legendary McLaren Le Mans race which won in the GT1 class of '97.
Starting with the design, the new McLaren 600LT Spider is easily one of the best-looking topless supercars at present. The biggest highlight is, of course, the top-mounted twin-exhaust pipes which literally spurts flames during normal overruns. It is quite a sight to watch.
Unlike the coupe, you can actually see the exhausts doing their thing if you turn back enough while driving (or you can just use the IRVM to avoid hitting a tree in the process). If that is not enough, you can hear the glorious note played by the turbocharged V8 while letting your hair feel the wind.
The McLaren 600LT's carbon MonoCell chassis did not require too many modifications to compensate the lack of a fixed roof (and the change in structural rigidity it brought). It is just 50kg heavier than the coupe; quite a forgivable weight gain for a three-fold metal roof.
In fact, at a dry weight of 1297kg, the McLaren 600LT Spider is 80kg lighter than the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider and 100kg less than that of the McLaren 570S Spider (which is essentially its base car). However, these weight savings can only be achieved if you uncheck the AC and audio system from the equipment list, and opt the carbon-fibre bucket seats borrowed from the McLaren Senna.
Regarding specs, the McLaten 600LT Spider is powered by the existing 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which makes 592bhp and 620Nm of torque. This is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission which drives the rear wheels.
Put together, the 600LT Spider can hit 100km/h from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds (same as the coupe) till it tops out at 324km/h with the roof up (the coupe is just 4km/h faster). With the top down, the car can hit 315km/h.
It is also worth noting that the roof can be raised or lowered while the car is moving at speeds up to 40km/h. In both formats, the McLaren 600LT Spider is quite a looker, just like its elder sibling — the McLaren 720S Spider.
At 201,500 GBP (roughly Rs 1.85 crore in direct conversion), the McLaren 600LT Spider is 16,000 pounds (close to Rs 15 lakh) costlier than its coupe avatar. With the host of optional extras on offer, the pricing will increase even further.
Thoughts On The New McLaren 600LT Spider
McLaren has already made a statement on the supercar market in just a short period of time (just around 10 years), after making a comeback from the 'F1' days with MP4-12C. Since then, the brand has introduced a wide range of models; each giving a strong blow to the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and even Porsche.
With the new McLaren 600LT Spider, the market for the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder LP610-4, Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet and especially the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider, will become tough.
