Maruti Suzuki S-Cross BS-VI Diesel 1.6-Litre Spied Testing Ahead Of Launch: Spy Pics & Details
Maruti Suzuki, is gearing up to introduce a new BS-VI complaint diesel engine to their model line-up. Ahead of the official announcement, the company is testing their S-Cross crossover hatchback with BS-VI 1.6-litre diesel engine in India.
The spy pics from Gaadiwaadi reveal a current-gen model of the S-Cross equipped with emission equipment for testing the pollution coming out the BS-VI engine. It also reveals, the test mule to feature the 1.6 badge at the rear, indicating the old 1.6-litre engine.
We had reported earlier about the company's plan to introduce a BS-VI compliant diesel engine to their line-up. The 1.6 diesel engine sourced from Fiat, was discontinued by Maruti Suzuki, due to low demand in 2017. However, Maruti Suzuki might bring back the engine with BS-VI compliance by next year.
Maruti Suzuki launched the S-Cross facelift model, back in 2017. At the time of the launch the company replaced the 1.6-litre diesel ‘DDiS 320' engine, with the smaller 1.3-litre ‘DDiS 200' mild-hybrid diesel power unit, featured on the current model. However, the company has confirmed that they will discontinue the 1.3-litre diesel engine from all the models, and will not carry forward to make it BS-VI compliant.
Instead, the company earlier said, if the demand for diesel engine continues after BS-VI emission norms becomes effective in the country, they would look to offer the home grown 1.5-litre diesel engine with BS-VI compliance. But, the company seems to be leaning towards making the 1.6-litre engine BS-VI complaint, and much earlier than the above-mentioned timeline as well.
The 1.6-litre BS-IV diesel engine churned out 118bhp and 320Nm of torque, as compared to the current 1.3-litre mild-hybrid diesel power unit churning out 89bhp and 200Nm of torque. However, the company will phase out the 1.3-litre engine by April, 2020.
We expect the power figures of upcoming 1.6-litre diesel engine to remain the same after becoming BS-VI compliant. The larger capacity engine makes more power and torque, which will be ideal to use it on SUVs and MPVs from the company's line-up as well.
Maruti Suzuki started introducing BS-VI petrol engines across its range of models from April this year. The first model to receive a BS-VI compliant engine from the company, was the Baleno hatchback. The company currently has a large line-up of BS-VI compliant cars in their line-up.
Next in-line to achieve BS-VI compliance would be the S-Cross, and the Vitara Brezza with the 1.5-litre BS-VI SHVS petrol engine that is already featured in the Ertiga and XL6 MPVs.
Thoughts About The S-Cross With 1.6 BS-VI Diesel Engine Spied
The 1.6-litre diesel engine achieving BS-VI compliance makes sense, as it could be used to power a wide variety of models in the company's line-up. The 1.6-litre diesel engine was meant for the enthusiasts, who were looking at performance machines in the market earlier. But due to low demand and niche market the company had to discontinue the engine. Now, with the company actively testing the engine, the enthusiasts can rejoice, and wait for an official announcement to make purchase plans.
