Maruti Gypsy Discontinued — 33 Years Of Production Comes To An End
Maruti Suzuki has discontinued the Gypsy in India. The Maruti Gypsy was launched in India back in 1985 and after 33 years of production, the company has finally decided to pull the plug.
The Gypsy is among the oldest models from Maruti Suzuki in India. It was the third model to go on sale in the market after the Maruti 800 and the Omni van. Now, Maruti Suzuki has sent out an official statement to its dealers stating that production of all variants of the Gypsy has been stopped. The dealers have also been asked to stop accepting bookings for the SUV.
The main reason for the discontinuation for the Maruti Gypsy is the upcoming stringent safety and crash test norms of April and October 2019. Maruti Suzuki has barely changed the design of the 80s SUV. The design and overall structure of the Gypsy have remained largely unchanged for 33 years. Therefore, Maruti would have had to restructure the entire SUV from scratch in order for it to comply with the safety and crash test norms.
Also, the production numbers were significantly low, which wouldn't have made the investment worth-while. Hence the company decided to completely discontinue production of the iconic SUV from the 80s.
At the time of launch, the Maruti Gypsy came with a single petrol engine option, in the form of a 1.0-litre four-cylinder offering with a four-speed transmission. This was, however, upgraded to a larger 1.3-litre engine variant at a later stage; mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Maruti Gypsy has been quite a popular SUV, mainly due to its no-frills, basic, yet indestructible character. The Gypsy was also the go-to SUV for the Indian Army for quite a while, with the last order coming in 2015. The Maruti Gypsy is also quite common in the 4x4 off-road community, mainly for the same reason.
Thoughts On The Maruti Gypsy Discontinuation
The Maruti Gypsy has been on sale in the Indian market, for over 33 years. The Gypsy SUV has remained a niche product in the market for the most part of its life; mainly due to its basic no-frills character. With production of the Gypsy finally coming to an end, it is definitely the end of one of the most popular products in the Indian market.
