However, with the upcoming stringent crash test norms and the emission norms of 2020, Maruti has decided to discontinue all models with the 800cc engine; including the Maruti Omni. Maruti is currently working on the next-generation Alto model for the Indian market.

The new Maruti Alto will not only comply with the upcoming crash test norms, but will also feature a completely new design and receive a number of latest features seen on some of the other newer Maruti Suzuki models.

The new Maruti Alto will be based on the Future-S concept showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. It will carry forward a similar SUV-type stance, similar to its competition, the Renault Kwid. The new Maruti Alto 800 has been spotted testing in India on multiple occasions, which although highly camouflaged confirms the SUV-type stance of the entry-level hatchback.

The current generation Maruti Alto 800 brought in volume sales to the brand in India. It is powered by a 793cc three-cylinder petrol engine producing 48bhp and 69Nm of torque. It is also available with a factory-fitted CNG variant which churns out 40bhp and 60Nm of torque. Both variant are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

In 2014, Maruti Suzuki also introduced the Alto K10 powered by a larger 1.0-litre unit. The Maruti Alto K10 will continue to remain in production and sales until the launch of the next-generation Alto hatchback.

Thoughts On The Maruti Alto 800 Production Discontinuation

The Maruti Alto 800 has been leading the top-selling charts for over a decade now, with little to no competition. The Alto has also recorded consistent sales in the market year-on-year, with most customers, being first-time car buyers. The new Maruti Alto is expected to be launched sometime later this year, around July-2019. Once the new Maruti Alto is launched, it will continue to rival the likes of the Renault Kwid and the Datsun GO.
