Mahindra has discontinued the XUV500 petrol and diesel All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) automatic variants. The petrol engine option has been removed from the model altogether.

The automatic transmission option is now available with a diesel engine and in front-wheel-drive configuration only. Mahindra has also increased the pricing for all the variants of the XUV500.

The base variant of the SUV is now priced at 12.31 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), costlier by Rs 8,000. While all other variants see an increase of Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000.

The XUV500 petrol variant was available in just the top-spec G AT variant. It was powered by a 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit producing 139bhp and 320Nm of torque, making the XUV500 one of the most powerful petrol-powered seven-seater SUVs in its class. The petrol-engine was offered with a six-speed automatic transmission only.

The SUV's diesel variants are powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine producing 153bhp and 360Nm of torque. Multiple combinations were offered with the XUV500's diesel variants. One could choose between a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission, with or without a four-wheel-drive system.

The Mahindra XUV500 was one of the few vehicles to feature manual and automatic transmission options in its top-spec variants. Now, the company has limited the automatic transmission to two-wheel drive only.

We believe the company's decision to axe the petrol and diesel AWD AT models are due to their low sales figures. Mahindra will soon introduce a BS-VI compliant diesel engine with the current-generation XUV500, before the 2020 XUV500 is launched next year.

Alongside making changes to the current-generation XUV500, Mahindra is said to be working on a new-generation of their SUV model. The upcoming revision to the XUV500 would be its mid-life update from the company, which will help boost sales figures. The next-gen XUV500 will go up against the likes of Kia Seltos, MG Hector, Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier.

The upcoming 2020 XUV500 is expected to undergo a complete overhaul, with new exterior and interior design changes. It could get ventilated seats, a new infotainment display, a new steering wheel design and a fully-digital instrument cluster as well. The interior changes are aimed at making the SUV's cabin feel more premium and modern.

Thoughts About The Mahindra XUV500 Variants Discontinued

Mahindra seems to be rethinking their strategy with the XUV500, as it sold just 968 units last month. The company is concentrating more towards updating their models to meet the BS-VI emission norms, before the deadline set to April 1st, 2019. The company will soon introduce a new BS-VI compliant petrol powertrain to the XUV500 model line-up.
