Mahindra Thar Petrol Model Launching In 2020: Spy Pics, Details & Expected Price
There are reports that Mahindra is going to launch the Thar in a petrol-automatic model. Spy pics taken by CarDekho show a petrol model being tested in Ladakh, India. Mahindra is confident that a petrol variant will increase sale and push the Thar towards the lifestyle segment.
Expectations are that the all-new Thar (P) will feature the same 2.2-litre engine that was offered on the XUV500. While the engine produces 148bhp of power and 300Nm of torque, we expect the engine to be tuned differently for the 2020 Thar (P).
Diesel variant of the 2020 Thar could possibly feature the Scorpio's 2.2-litre mHawk engine that produces 140bhp of power and 320Nm of torque.
The automatic transmission will most likely be the only automatic that Mahindra has -the six-speed torque converter that is featured on the XUV500.
A new petrol engine will boost sales of the Thar in the lifestyle segment. The current-generation Thar is a thoroughbred off-roader, and offers Spartan comforts at best. Mahindra wants to target folk who look at the Thar as a lifestyle vehicle that can be used more on tarmac than on other terrain.
In addition, a petrol engine could possibly reduce costs that can be directed towards a more comfortable cabin that has better creature comforts. These changes however will carry a premium of about Rs 2 lakh over the current-generation Mahindra Thar that is priced between Rs 9.60 lakh and Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
Thoughts About A Petrol Engine On The Mahindra Thar
This is fantastic move by Mahindra. A petrol model of the Thar will do very well for the masses who want to drive a jeep styled SUV on tarmac. We all know folk who want to buy the Thar but do not because the current line up is off-road bias.
Mahindra is taking the Thar in the right direction, and could also launch the SUV with a diesel engine (in the lifestyle segment of course) - making it available for road use. This will help the company boost sales big time.
