Mahindra Announces Price Hike Of Up Rs 36,000 Across It’s Portfolio
India based auto giant Mahindra has announced a price hike across its entire portfolio. The new prices will be effective 1 July, 2019. The company says the increase will be up to Rs 36,000 across all models. The mark up in prices are because of the implementation of AIS 145 Safety Norms across all passenger vehicles in India.
The AIS 145 Safety Norms that come in to effect on 1 July, 2019 mandate the fitment of several safety features including driver airbag, seat belt reminder for driver and co-driver, rear parking sensors and an over speed alert for the driver across all passenger vehicle models.
The newest products in Mahindra's line-up, the XUV300, and the company's flagship vehicle, the Alturas G4, are already loaded with these safety features, and we expect to see a minimal increase in prices for these models.
The Thar however is being discontinued because it will not comply with new crash test norms. While the Thar700 has been launched as a run-out special, a rise in prices is expected, simply because of the limited numbers.
According to Rajan Wadhera, President Automotive Sector, at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said, "At Mahindra safety has been at the core of our product development process and we welcome the regulatory requirements relating to safety upgrades."
"We value every road user's life and have been effectively contributing to the evolving safety ecosystem. However, the safety regulatory requirement has led to some cost increases. Consequently, we are taking a price hike across some of our passenger vehicles, effective July 1, 2019," he added.
Thoughts About The Price Hike Across The Mahindra Portfolio
We do not mind a price hike of up to Rs 36,000 across the Mahindra portfolio, but we expect no changes in prices for the Thar 700, considering it is more of a send off for the model. Having said that, we are aware that Mahindra manufactures very safe cars and SUVs, and we feel the minimal price hike is justified. Almost all facelift models, and obviously newer models usually come at a premium, only this time around we know where the extra Rs 36,000 (up to) is being spent.
