Kochi To Get 15 Electric Vehicle Charging Station — Total Operational Capacity By End 2020
The government in the state of Kerala had stated earlier that plans to incorporate over a million electric vehicles by the end of 2022. This adoption of green vehicles will be led by the Kochi. Reports indicate that the port city will be getting the state's first public electric charging stations soon.
The operations are being run by public sector oil companies and they will set up 15 working charging stations in the city shortly. A new report citing industry sources said that the first three charging stations will be located in Kochi region.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation is part of the plan and they will set up 14 out of the total 15 charging stations, beginning with stations at petroleum outlets near Edappally, InfoPark, and the Kerala High Court. Even the Indian Oil Corporation will have a charging facility near Edappally.
After launching charging stations at Kochi, the state also plans to set up electric charging stations at Panancheri, Kolaazhi, Chalakudy, Kombidi, Chevoor, Kodungalloor, Thriprayar, Choondal, and Vaniyampara in the Thrissur district.
These charging stations will cater to both, direct charging of batteries in vehicles, and also battery swapping. Citing safety reasons, the electric charging facilities be installed at a minimum of six meters from the fuel vending machines. The units will also be lockable so as to avoid any accidental disconnection during charging. The facilities will also have a separate power supply line for operation.
Thoughts About Kochi Getting 15 Public Electric Charging Stations
This is a good move by the government. These public electric charging stations will give us a real time information about the EV infrastructure in the country. The time taken to charge vs. the number of vehicles queued will help the government understand what they need to do to improve the EV infrastructure in the country.
If India truly want to bring in the electric era as fast as planned, infrastructure is the key. The current problems the country faces is the lack of charging stations. The situation is worse in high car density areas like Mumbai and Delhi.
We think every city must have at at least 15 EV charging stations. This will also help in advancing sale of Electric Vehicles.
