India-spec Volkswagen T-Cross Details Revealed — Bigger On The Inside
German carmaker Volkswagen is set to bring the T-Cross SUV to India by around 2021. Now a new report by Autocar India has revealed how the India-spec Volkswagen T-Cross will differ from the international version of the SUV.
According to the report, the Volkswagen T-Cross SUV for India will be larger in terms of space on the inside but will be less expensive to build compared to its international siblings. While the international-spec T-Cross is built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB A0 platform, the version of the SUV coming to the sub-continent will instead be based on the more affordable MQB A0 IN platform that was developed for India.
Autocar India claims that the desi version of the Volkswagen T-Cross will feature a 10mm longer wheelbase at 2,651mm. The publication claims that the height of the SUV in India will be around 90-100mm taller than that of the vehicles sold in other markets like Europe. The biggest beneficiaries of the increased interior space will be the passengers at the back. The extra space will be seen on the outside, in the form of longer rear doors.
Other changes coming to the India-bound Volkswagen T-Cross will come in the form of a raised ride height which will give the T-Cross a more SUV-like stance. The increased ground clearance of 205mm should help the India bound version of the T-Cross deal with the rough roads of the sub-continent. Helping the SUV deal with our roads will be a more comfort-oriented suspension setup. The india-spec T-Cross is also expected to get large solid anti-roll bars along with a stiffer rear axle setup to counteract body roll.
Under the bonnet in India, the Volkswagen T-Cross is expected to sport two-petrol engine options, with the carmaker ditching diesel engines in India. The smaller of the two engines will be a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine with 113bhp while the larger engine will be a 1.5-litre unit with 128bhp on tap. The larger engine is expected to feature cylinder deactivation technology.
The engines could be offered in duel-fuel form with CNG set to be the other propellant that the powerplants could run on. A mild hybrid version of the SUV is also said to be on the cards, though that is only expected to arrive quite a bit later in the SUV's product cycle.
