Hyundai Verna Outsells Maruti Ciaz & Honda City — New King Of The Executive Sedans

The executive sedan segment in India over the past few years has been a two-horse race between the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Honda City. Both sedans have been swiping first place from each in the segment, but last month as sales across the industry tanked by 16.7 per cent, the Hyundai Verna managed to sneak its way to the top spot, narrowly beating out both the Ciaz and the City.

Overall the executive segment in India, according to AutoPunditz shrunk by 38 per cent in the month of April 2019 when compared to the same period of time in 2018. Manufacturers in the excutive sedan segment sold a total of 9,617 units in the month of April 2019. This was a loss of 5,938 units when compared to sales in April 2018, a month which accounted for the sale of 15,555 executive sedans in India.

All cars in the executive sedan segment except for the Fiat Linea (which grew by 125 per cent / 5 units to 9 in total) saw a drop in sales. The Toyota Yaris was the worst of in terms of percentage dropping in sales by 78 per cent year-over-year from 1,585 units last year to just 354 units last month.

The biggest drop in terms of number came in the case of the Maruti Ciaz, which saw its sales numbers drop by 2,327 units in April 2019 to 2,789 units. Maruti had sold 5,116 units of the Ciaz in April 2018.

The Verna too suffered from the sales slump, as sales for the Hyundai executive sedan plummeted by 28 per cent. Compared to 4,077 units sold in April 2018, Hyundai sold just 2,932 Verna sedans last month. This was a loss of 1,145 units year-over-year for the Hyundai Verna in India.

The other heavyweight of the segment — the Honda City — also saw a drop in its fortunes with the Japanese carmaker selling only 2,394 of its executive sedans in India. This was 972 sedans (28 per cent) less than what Honda sold in the segment over the same period last year. Honda shipped out 3,366 units of the City sedan in April 2018.
