Hyundai Santro Bookings Cross 57,000 Units; Moves Up The Ladder With The Top-Selling Cars In India

The new-generation Hyundai Santro was launched in India back in October 2018 at a starting price of Rs 3.89 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi). The affordable hatchback from Hyundai India is doing really well on the market and sales have been growing at a steady pace since the time of its launch. Now, the South Korean automotive brand in India shares that the Hyundai Santro's bookings have crossed 57,000 units.

Due to the overwhelming market response, the company recently increased the production of the Hyundai Santro from 8,500 to 10,000 units a month. For the same reason, the waiting periods have dropped significantly and bookings are still going strong.

Based on the AH2 hatchback concept, the Hyundai Santro slots perfectly between the soon-to-be-discontinued Eon and the popular Grand i10 in the brand's product portfolio. The Hyundai Santro is also a strong rival to many Maruti Suzuki products and its popularity is not limited to just the Indian market.

In fact, the Hyundai Santro has been nominated for the prestigious World Car Of The Year (WCOTY) 2019 awards in the 'Urban Car' category. To win the title, the Santro has to beat the tough competition showcased by the Audi A1, Kia Soul, SEAT Arona and Suzuki Jimny — check out the full list of WCOTY 2019 contestants here.

The 2018 Hyundai Santro is available with a single engine choice, but in both petrol and CNG choices. The 1.1-litre four-cylinder unit makes 68bhp and 99Nm of torque, while the output comes down to 58bhp and 84Nm in the CNG format. The power plant is either a five-speed manual or its respective AMT transmission. The Santro is the first Hyundai product to feature the brand's all-new Smart Auto AMT unit.

The Hyundai Santro also impresses in the fuel economy department. In its petrol format, the hatchback returns 20.3km/l while this number rises to 30.48km/kg for the CNG variant. Both are ARAI-claimed figures.

Regarding features, the Hyundai Santro comes with dual airbags, ABS+EBD, electrically-adjustable ORVMs, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; reverse parking sensors, steering-mounted controls, etc. Having no alloy wheels even as an option is a letdown for many.

Thoughts On The Hyundai Santro

The Hyundai Santro is a strong rival to the likes of the Tata Tiago, all-new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and higher variants of the Renault Kwid. With enough features for the price and a nametag borrowed from an icon of the Indian automotive industry in the 2000s, the Hyundai Santro is inching close to being one of the best-selling cars in the country.
