The Hyundai Kona electric vehicle has received 120 customer bookings in just 10 days. This is an impressive feat when one considers the fact that the Hyundai Kona is a premium electric car launched at a price of Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India).
Electric vehicles are no longer the future, but are already here to stay. The Indian market is no stranger to EVs. It all started with the mass production of the Maini Reva back in 2001. For a while there was no progress made.
However, once the green mobility revolution began globally, Mahindra stepped in and took over the Reva brand to form Mahindra Electric. Tata Motors too produced the Tigor EV for commercial use. There are also several electric two-wheelers that were launched in India.
The electric car space though did not see any new vehicles until Hyundai launched the Kona EV in India on 09 July, 2019. The Hyundai Kona is a premium electric car that offers premium features and with a Rs 25.30 lakh price tag, is priced in a premium manner too.
However it is the only electric car that has received such a response from the Indian audience. Hyundai claims to have received 120 confirmed customer bookings and over 10,000 requests for test drives within just 10 days of the Kona EV's launch.
This can primarily be attributed to the specifications of the Hyundai Kona, the likes of which have never been seen before in the Indian market. The Hyundai Kona has an electric drivetrain that solves almost all of the apprehensions Indians had regarding electric vehicles, including range anxiety and charging duration.
The range anxiety is taken care of by an ARAI-certified range of 452 kilometres on a fully charged battery. The battery of the HYundai Kona can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in just 57 minutes with a 50kW DC charger.
Using a normal charger though would take six hours and 10 minutes to charge it up to the max. Performance too is top-notch with 0-100km/h taking under 9.7 seconds. The Hyundai Kona EV is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power output of 136bhp and a peak torque output of 395Nm.
In addition to the advanced long-range electric drivetrain, the Hyundai Kona EV offers the best in terms of features. It comes loaded with a sunroof, keyless entry and go, automatic climate control ventilated front seats, digital instrument cluster, a 7.0-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, etc.
Safety features offered with the Hyundai Kona too is top-notch with six airbags, ABS, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rear parking sensors and camera.
Vikas Jain, national sales head, Hyundai Motor India, said, "The digital enquires and footfall at our dealerships have increased as customers are excited to experience electric cars. The change of perception and adaptability is clearly visible as there is huge interest and request for test drives."
Thoughts On Hyundai Kona EV Gets 120 Bookings And Over 10,000 Test Drive Requests In 10 Days
The Hyundai Kona EV has put to rest a majority of apprehensions about electric vehicles. However, we are still lagging behind on infrastructure, but will get there too eventually. The Hyundai Kona has received such a warm welcome despite being so expensive.
We wonder how much faster the Indian consumers would adapt to electric vehicles, if they were cheaper. The government is working on just that and will soon reduce GST on electric vehicles from 12 percent to 5 percent.
