Hyundai Kona Electric Launching On 9 July — The Koreans Are Leading The Electric Revolution

Hyundai revealed the Kona Electric car in February of last year. The company then stated in March last year that they were planning to launch an all-electric car in India. Hyundai will launch its first electric model, the Kona Electric on July 9, 2019.

The Kona EV looks quite similar internal combustion engine based Kona, although the electric variant has lost the grille and its infamous alloy wheels. This was revealed when the Hyundai Kona Electric was also spotted testing on Indian roads through the second half of last year.

According to AutoCar India, Hyundai Kona EV is available in international markets in two options - one with a 39kW battery unit that has a claimed travel range of 312 kilometers, and the other with a 64kW battery unit with a claimed range of 482 kilometers.

Hyundai is expected to launch the 39kW model. This variant of the Hyundai Kona Electric produces an equivalent of 136bhp of power and 395Nm of peak torque, has a claimed 0-100 kilometers per hour in 9.7 seconds, and a claimed top speed of 155 kilometers per hour.

Hyundai claims that the Lithium-ion battery can be charged up to 80 percent in as little as 54 minutes using a 100kW DC fast charger. Conventional charging methods will require 6 hours and 10 minutes to bring the battery up to speed.

We expected the Hyundai Kona Electric to be priced at about Rs 25 lakh ex-showroom (India). Hyundai also said that they do not expect to retail more than 60 units of the Kona Electric every month.

Thoughts About The Hyundai Kona Electric

Twenty-five lakh for an Electric is a bit steep we think. Yes, there will be unmatched tech in the Kona Electric and we know that Hyundai will only offer the very best. We will have to wait until closer to launch to know more in terms of performance and pricing. Hyundai just about launched the Venue and has priced it extremely competitively. We assume they will play the same cards with the Kona Electric.
