Hyundai & Kia To Get New All-Electric Car Platform — The EV Future Is Nearly Here
South Korean automaker Hyundai is set to enter the Indian electric car scene with the Kona eSUV later this year. The Hyundai Kona and other electric offerings from the carmaker's premium brands like Kia (with the Soul EV) are all based on current vehicles.
All that is set to change as a new report by Auto Express states that Hyundai is set to follow in the footsteps of the Volkswagen Group and create an all-new vehicle platform just for its future electric vehicles.
The British publication quoted a source as saying that the all-new electric platform for future Hyundai and Kia EVs is around 2 years away. The same source also told Auto Express that the new Hyundai electric vehicle platform would concentrate on B and C-segment cars.
The Hyundai Motor Group, which includes Hyundai, Kia and luxury brand Genesis, has earlier stated that it plans to bring 38 new electrified green vehicles into production worldwide by 2025. Of the 38 cars, Hyundai has stated that 14 will be purely electric vehicles along with 10 regular hybrids and 12 plug-in hybrids. Last year,
Hyundai had stated that it would be looking into bringing its entire range of electric vehicles to India. Hyundai Motor Company's current pure EV range consists of the Kona electric SUV, the Ioniq sedan from Hyundai and the Soul e-hatchback and e-Niro e-SUV from Kia.
Hyundai's first foray into the electric car market in India will be in the form of the Kona. The Hyundai Kona is available with both internal combustion and electric powertrains and it is the latter that will be making its way into India, later this year. Prices for the all-electric SUV are expected to hover between the Rs 20-25 lakh mark (ex-showroom)
The Hyundai Kona electric SUV is offered with two different levels of power and range. The base Kona electric uses a 39.2 kWh battery pack that powers a single electric motor producing 134bhp and 394Nm of torque. The base Kona electric has a range of 300 kilometres on a single charge. The more powerful version of the Kona ups the power to 201bhp thanks to a larger 64kWh battery pack that also delivers a range of 415km on a single charge.
