Honda Sales Grow By 23 Per Cent In April 2019 — The Amaze Effect
Japanese carmaker Honda has registered a growth of 23 per cent in sales numbers for the month of April 2019 compared to the same period last month. Honda sold 11,272 units in April 2019 compared to 9,143 vehicles in the same period last year. The Japanese carmaker even exported out 220 units to international markets last month from India.
The driver of the the growth for Honda in the month of April was the Amaze compact sedan. Since its launch in late April 2018, the second generation Honda Amaze has been accounting for around half the sales for the Japanese carmaker.
Speaking about the Japanese carmaker's April 2019 sales, Rajesh Goel, Senior Vice President and Director, Sales and Marketing, Honda Cars India Ltd said, "HCIL's April sales growth is primarily due to lower base effect, as there was no Amaze in corresponding month last year during model runout. The ongoing elections and overall subdued market sentiment continues to affect the sales momentum. Going forward, the industry is heading towards a tougher year impacting sales due to volatility in fuel prices, increase in car prices owing to new regulations and stricter inventory control for smooth switchover to BS-VI regime by year end."
With new BS-VI emission norms along with stricter safety norms going into effect, the entire automotive market is bracing itself for a tough year ahead. With prices of cars and SUVs expected to rise exponentially mainly due to the upcoming BS-VI emission norms, many carmakers are set to bring changes to their lineup.
Maruti Suzuki, the nation's largest carmaker has announced its intention to ditch diesel engines altogether. This is because BS-VI norms are expected to increase the gap between petrol and diesel powered variants of the same car by around Rs 1.5 lakhs. The Volkswagen Group is also ditching diesel cars in favour of petrol and those powered by alternate fuels like CNG.
Honda currently does not have any plans to drop diesel engines from its lineup and is set to launch the HR-V SUV in India later this year. The all-new HR-V is expected to rival the upcoming MG Hector and will borrow its 1.8-litre petrol and 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine from the Civic sedan.
