Honda Accord’s 2018 Sales Figure Was Zero — Launch Of The New Toyota Camry (2019) To Blame?

Honda Cars India sells the ninth-generation Accord hybrid sedan in India strictly as a CBU (Completely-Built Unit). It was first showcased in the country back at Auto Expo 2016. The then-new Honda Accord featured a complete revamp from its predecessor, in terms of styling and technology. However, not even one Honda Accord was sold in 2018.

GaadWaadi reports that the Accord's direct rival, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, hit a decent sales figure of 334 units, ast year (59% less than in 2017). The Toyota model in question was soon discontinued to make way for the launch of the new Toyota Camry (2019 MY). The brand can expect good sales numbers for the new Camry in the coming months.

As for the Honda Accord Hybrid, its ridiculously -expensive price tag deserves some blame. The car was launched at Rs 37,00,000 ex-showroom (Delhi); meaning that on-road prices could hit above Rs 45 lakh. That is a lot for a Honda product, considering the fact the brand sells value-for-money products such as the Honda Amaze and Jazz.

Honda Car India did share that the current Accord Hybrid was introduced somewhat like a market experiment. The Japanese brand is apparently concentrating on making the upcoming tenth-generation Honda Accord Hybrid, a brilliant choice in its segment (which would be dominated by the Skoda Superb and of course, the new Toyota Camry). The Skoda Superb is the present market leader and 1524 units of it were sold in 2018.

Two years after its introduction, Honda showcased the tenth-generation Civic sedan at Auto Expo 2018. The market instantly developed a liking towards the new Honda Civic, since it features almost the same level of equipment as the current Accord and costs much lesser as well. This is also one major reason why the Honda Accord's sales in 2018 were zero.

Coming to the new Toyota Camry, the hybrid sedan is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine which makes 178bhp and 221Nm of torque. This is coupled with an electric motor capable of generating 88kW; thus giving a combined power output of 208bhp. Transmission duties are done by a six-step CVT unit.

Thoughts On Honda Accord's Sales Performance In 2018

Even though the pricing of the Honda Accord was a bit over the edge, the sedan featured a lot on the inside. However, that was not enough to attract enough sales (or any sale for that matter). The next-generation Honda Accord will hopefully make up for this and will be a strong alternative to the new Toyota Camry Hybrid.
