Fifty Low-Floor Blue Buses To Hit Delhi Roads Next Month Under Cluster Scheme
The Delhi government has announced that blue buses are set to hit the city's roads next month. The government will launch 1,000 low-floor air-conditioned buses under the cluster scheme, and the first lot of 50 buses are scheduled to be launched in December.
The government says that this is the first time low-floor buses will be inducted via the cluster scheme. The scheme already has 1,900 standard floor buses in operation.
Sources say that the multiple colour options were discussed and blue was chosen. The colour will help citizen differentiate between the non-air conditioned green and red buses of the Delhi Transport Corporation, and the orange standard-floor non-air conditioned buses of the cluster scheme.
The low-floor buses will make boarding and alighting easier for elderly passengers, children, and the differently abled.
A contract for three clusters featuring 650 low-floor buses has already been sanctioned by the Delhi government's transport department, and the vehicles are expected to be delivered soon. A tender for the remaining 350 buses will be floated shortly.
The Delhi government is also in the process of inducting 1,000 standard-floor buses that feature hydraulic lifts. Roughly 229 of these buses have been inducted in the cluster scheme since August this year.
The government is also in the process of inducting 1,000 electric buses in the city. The induction is planned over multiple phases. A tender for 300 low-floor electric buses was floated on 15 October, as part of phase one. The last date for submission of bids was November 13.
All the new buses being inducted feature 37 seats, and are equipped with features like GPS trackers, 14 panic buttons with alarms, three CCTV cameras, and hydraulic lifts to make life easier for the elderly and the differently abled.
The government is also planning to offer single day passes that can be used with the cluster scheme. Single day passes are currently available for use only on buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation.
The passes will be priced at Rs 50, and will allow for unlimited travel on cluster scheme buses throughout the day. The government has also prepared a cabinet note for the proposal, and a decision will be take soon.
Thoughts About The Blue Buses
Using colours to differentiate between different buses is a smart thing to do. Colours tell commuters which buses ply routes, offer air-conditioning, and so on. We're impressed that Kejriwal and company settle for blue.
