EV Charging Stations To Be Set Up Every 25km On Indian Highways And Main Roads

NEW DELHI: EV (Electric Vehicles) charging stations could be set up every 25km on highways and main roads of India, in a bid to ensure that 25 per cent of all cars sold in the country are all-electric by 2030. The Union Government has formulated some new guidelines to promote efficient and abundant electric-vehicle supporting-infrastructure (which mainly includes ev charging stations) in India.

The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has made many amendments to the Model Building By-Laws (MBBL) 2016 and Urban Regional Development Plans Formulation and Implementation (URDPFI) Guidelines 2018, in order to create an effective ev charging network in the country. The guidelines apply to Indian States as well as Union Territories.

"The guidelines on Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure have been circulated to all the State Governments and UT Administrations with the request to amend their Building Byelaws and Master Plan Regulations," the Ministry shared.

The updated guidelines state that at least one ev charging station should be set up on either side of highways; every 100km for long range and heavy-duty electric vehicles. On the other hand, normal charging stations should be installed at locations conveniently placed apart by not more than 25km.

It is only recently when the electric vehicle infrastructure firm, EVI Technologies, announced their plans to introduce 3000 EV charging stations in Delhi alone; each of which will require an investment of Rs 15,000-20,000. A total of 20,000 charging facilities will be installed in the next one-and-a-half years with an investment of around Rs 100 crore — check out more details here.

The Indian government has introduced many interesting strategies to promote electric mobility in the country at a fast pace. Easier loan schemes for EVs, conversion of conventional petrol/diesel-powered three-wheelers to electric, tax deductions, etc., are some examples in this regard.

Furthermore, latest data shows that electric vehicles in India have been witnessing an increased demand for the past few months. This is especially evident in urban markets that are prone to traffic congestions and pollution — read more details here.

Thoughts On India's Electric Mobility

Compared to foreign nations, India is still at an infant stage in the field of e-mobility. However, major EV brands such as Ather Energy and Mahindra Electric are taking necessary measures to improve the desirability and popularity of non-fossil-fuel-powered vehicles in the country, with the active support from the Indian government.
