UK To Mandate Installation Of EV charging Points In All New Houses — Wise Move Indeed

The government of the United Kingdom is planning to mandate the installation of electric vehicle charging points in all new houses across the country. If the plan is implemented, England would become the first country to make the installation of charging ports at home compulsory.

This is one of the plans that is expected to make the transition to electric vehicles easier. Electric vehicles are not just the future anymore. EVs are here to stay and countries all across the world are aware of this fact.

Developed and developing countries are making strides in the field of electric mobility. The UK though is one of the few states that realised the need for green mobility very early, way before the EV revolution began.

The country quickly installed hydrogen fuel pumps alongside petrol and diesel pumps. Thousands of electric vehicle chargers were installed in public spaces like parking lots, shopping malls, IKEA stores, etc.

While all this is great, the English found that it just wasn't enough to promote electric vehicles. In-fact, companies that installed the chargers in public spaces started collecting a fee for the electricity being used.

Hence the government felt a greater need to mandate the installation of chargers at home. According to AutoExpress, all new houses built in the UK will be required to have an EV charging socket.

It hasn't specified whether it should be a rapid charger, fast charger or slow charger. New apartment complexes too would need to have at least one EV charger in the parking space for each apartment in the complex.

However, it hasn't been specified as to how the houses with on-the-street parking will deal with the new rule. According to the government, this new rule would ensure that all those who buy a house or construct one in the future will have an EV charger of their own by default, thereby reducing the reliance on those installed in public spaces.

This is a smart move when one considers the fact that at some point in time, all houses will have at least one EV.

Thoughts On EV Charging Points Must Be Installed In All New Houses In The UK Says The Government

A few European countries have been promoting green mobility solutions for years now, thereby pioneering the EV revolution. The UK is one of those countries. By considering this new mandate, the English government has proved that it does not intend to slow down in the process of converting to electric vehicles.

Also, keeping this new mandate in mind, we feel the Indian government too should bring in such a rule. One of the rules currently implemented in India is that all new houses being built needs to have a rain-water harvesting system installed.

Adding yet another rule for EV charging points to be installed would not hurt anybody, but will in-fact help more people as the popularity of EVs increase.
