Electric Vehicles In India See Better Sales Performance And Demand — Would You Buy One?
Electric Vehicles (EVs) in India are seeing better sales performance lately. Indian EVs have still got a long way to go to beat the popular fossil-fuel-powered vehicles sold in the country, but electric vehicles are currently witnessing an increased demand; especially in urban areas prone to traffic congestions.
Autocar India reports that Mahindra Electric, India's leading electric-car brand, has witnessed an overwhelming demand for its product portfolio. For the same reason, the brand is in talks with many stakeholders who are interested to invest in the field of electric mobility, in order to expand its business. The company revealed that it will be introducing electric three-wheelers and two-wheelers in five more Indian cities soon.
Pawan Goenka, Managing Director at Mahindra & Mahindra shared, "In three or four cities, there is very serious talk about setting up a fleet of vehicles. We will also, hopefully, very soon announce the project with Uber following up the commitment made last year."
"It took much longer than what we thought because the policy didn't get announced and then there was this whole business of registration being free, which was supposed to happen but has not happened yet. That makes a huge difference between commercial viability. Now that we have gotten all that sorted out, we will probably announce our first pilot certainly within this month," he further added.
The Indian government and various players in the country's automotive industry are trying their best to give a positive push to the popularity and acceptability of electric vehicles in the country. At the moment, there aren't enough 'desirable' electric vehicles in India except for a few examples from Ather Energy, Okinawa, Tata Motors and of course, Mahindra Electric.
Meanwhile, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) claims that converting existing petrol/diesel-powered three-wheelers to electric, is one of the ways to ensure rapid growth of electric vehicles in India — read more details here.
Thoughts On The Compatibility Of Electric Vehicles In India
In the present consumer and market conditions, electric vehicles might not be the most ideal choice to make. There is still a lack of enough supporting infrastructure (charging facilities, service networks, etc.) to accelerate the sale of EVs in India. However, this will improve at its own pace and the increased demand witnessed lately further ensures it.
