Continental Builds Heads Up Display For Sport And Performance Cars

Continental Engineering Services has developed the first ultra-compact high-performance head-up display (HUD) which the company says can be used in sports cars. The head-up display that has been developed can be integrated into cockpits with limited installation space. It offers reliable visualization of information in the driver's field of vision, which makes it intuitive and safe to use.

Ultra compact high performance HUDs are soon becoming a necessity because driving functions are steadily being transferred from drivers to vehicles (including sport and high performance cars). Automated driving enhances safety and comfort when driving in traffic jams, for instance, when the momentum and agility of a sports car is not utilized.

While heads-up displays have become an almost standard feature in luxury cars, it has been somewhat difficult to integrate in vehicles with special space requirements, such as sports cars. By optimizing the virtual image size visible to the driver, and modifying projection distances, developers at Continental Engineering Services have succeeded in significantly reducing the space taken up by the HUD.

Dr Christian Trapp, Senior Manager of Head-Up Displays, Continental Engineering Services, said, "Our compact head-up display allows highly accurate visualization of information on a projection area that is slightly smaller than in standard vehicles. With the smaller outward field of vision, our new development is in line with the vehicle concepts of most manufacturers."

Drivers receive all the information (within their field of vision) they need while using an HUD. While the drivers' eyes remain focused on the road, all-important information, such as warning messages and speed limits can be read straight from the windshield.

Thoughts About The Ultra Compact HUD Built By Continental

This is good news, we suppose, for high performance car drivers. Although we think that most performance car drivers have to concentrate on the road in the front and literally have no time to look at the instrument console or information on an HUD. Maybe the HUD makes for better readings when watching a video recording of the high speed run that was just achieved.

We definitely want to see one of these ultra-compact high-performance HUDs that Continental has built.
