Colour Coded Stickers For Cars, Bikes, And Other Vehicles — Coming Soon!

The Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry has asked all State Transport Authorities to ensure that all vehicles feature hologram-based colour coded stickers to identify which vehicles use petrol, diesel, and CNG as fuel.

Colour code

The Supreme Court of India had accepted a proposal from the ministry for hologram-based, light blue coloured stickers for vehicles using petrol and CNG, and orange coloured stickers for diesel vehicles. The idea behind the sticker codes is quick identification. The proposal was accepted by the Supreme Court in the October of 2018.

The Ministry issued the advisory on Wednesday, and said, "It has been mandated that the background colour for the self-destructive type chromium based hologram sticker shall be orange and it shall be light blue for the petrol and CNG vehicles."

The Ministry added that it was requesting compliance of the directions of Supreme Court and that State Transport Authorities had to ensure the use of colour coded stickers.

Colour coded stickers are in use across Europe but they are used for pollution control. We recently covered a story about how France allowed cars that had pollution sticker 1 and 2 within Paris to combat pollution and rising temperatures. Other countries that use these coloured stickers are Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, and the United Kingdom.

Thoughts About Coloured Stickers To Identify Types Of Fuel Vehicles Use

Great initiative by the ministry we think. Colour codes will not only help identify the type of fuel a particular vehicle uses, but also help identify vehicle that have a higher carbon footprint. We could also see the ministry use these stickers to ban certain vehicle from entering cities in order to reduce pollution.

We are unsure if there are other motives behind colour coding vehicles, but the biggest motive we see is restrictions within city limits. Older diesel models produce more pollution and carbon monoxide residues when compared to petrol and CNG based vehicle. This is true across all classes of vehicles, from private to commercial.

We really hope the State Transport Authorities implement the use of the coloured stickers soon. We feel the government is on the right path with the recent changes in traffic violation fines and now the stickers. Good show!
