The car sales report for the month of November 2019 has been released. Most major car manufacturers in India have released their sales performance figures for the previous month.
The performance figures showcase the declining sales trend in the Indian market, although certain brands like Hyundai and Volkswagen have managed to beat the trend and register growth in the Indian market.
Here are the sales reports of some of the top car brands in the Indian market.
Maruti Suzuki is the biggest car brand in the Indian market, dominating over half the market share in the country. The company, however, has been registering declining sales since the start of the year, affected by the auto industry slowdown.
In November 2019, Maruti Suzuki continued the downward slope in terms of sales, registering a decline of 3.2% in the domestic market. The brand recorded sales of 141,400 units of sales in the previous month, compared to 146,018 units in November 2018.
The export sales of Maruti Suzuki registered a higher decline of 7.7% in November 2019, recording 6,944 units; a decline from 7,521 units last year. Having said this, the company is better than the previous months when it registered a higher sales decline in the market.
Tata Motors also continued to register a decline in sales, with the end of the festive season in the country. The company registered 38,057 units of sales last month compared to 50,470 units in November 2018; a sharp decline of around 25%.
Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said,
"After an encouraging festival period, in November, the industry declined sharply. In addition, the industry is also preparing for the BS6 transition. In line with our strategy to focus on retails, we have further enhanced our network coverage. Our retail sales were more than wholesales by 15 per cent, which has helped us to reduce the network stock by 35 per cent in this fiscal."
Tata Motors, however, has a number of products lined-up for launch in the coming months. This includes the Nexon EV, Alroz and Gravitas, which is expected to help boost the sales of the brand in the Indian market.
Mahindra is the third Indian car manufacturer in the Indian market to register a drop in sales. The company registered a decline of around 7% in domestic sales, registering 38,614 units of sales in November 2019; compared to 41,564 units in the same month last year.
Talking specifically about the passenger vehicle segment, Mahindra registered a higher decline of 10% in the Indian market last month. In the PV segment, the company registered sales of 14,637 units in November 2019, compared to 16,188 units last year.
Veejay Ram Nakra, Chief of Sales & Marketing, Automotive Division, stated:
"The month post-festive season is historically a lean month for the automotive industry. Consumer demand, especially for passenger vehicles, typically picks up in the year-end that is in December. Therefore, we expect December to pan out better for the automotive industry."
The Korean carmaker in the Indian market, Hyundai is among the very few brands to have registered a growth in domestic sales in the month of November 2019. However, the sales growth was marginal by just 2% with 44,600 units in November 2019, compared to 43,709 units last year.
The export sales for Hyundai, however, managed to grow significantly. Export sales for Hyundai India grew by 25.2% last month with 15,900 units. Adding this, Hyundai managed to register an overall (Domestic + Export) sales growth of 10% with 60,500 units, compared to 56,411 units in November 2018.
Vikas Jain, National Sales Head - Hyundai Motor India said,
"Hyundai registered a cumulative growth of 7.2 per cent with 60,500 units in November 2019, on account of improved demand in the domestic and export markets. Despite the on-going market challenges, HMIL showcased good performance by Grand i10, Nios, Venue, Creta and Elite i20."
The company is now working on introducing its all-new Aura compact-sedan in the Indian market. The new Hyundai Aura is expected to replace the ageing Xcent model from the brand's lineup.
Honda has suffered a massive decline in sales in the previous month of November. The company registered 6,459 units of domestic sales, while export sales recorded 105 units. This translates to a massive decline of around 50% compared to November 2018 when it recorded 13,006 units.
Rajesh Goel, Senior VP & Director - Sales and Marketing, Honda Cars India Ltd said,
"Our sales numbers are better than our plan for the month. We are in the last leg of our BS4 runout and accordingly supplies had to be optimised as we progress towards the BS6 transition model by model sequentially."
Toyota is yet another brand in the Indian market, which has registered a drop in sales. The Japanese carmaker announced an overall sales decline of 19% in the previous month. The company sold 9241 units of sales in November 2019, compared to 11,390 units last year.
Domestic sales registered a higher decline of 22% with 8312 units of sales last month. Export sales did, however, manage to increase by a slight margin from 669 to 929 units in the previous month.
Raja, Deputy Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said,
"We have consciously lowered the volume of vehicles sold to dealers to ensure lean inventory/avoid high market offers, we are adjusting our production to ensure we do not put any excess burden on our dealerships before the shift to BS 6 in April 2020
Positive sentiments in the market have continued to November 2019 which has reflected in the spike in customer orders across all models. The boost in customer orders for all models has sustained this month even after the end of the festive season."
The German carmaker in the Indian market registered a growth of 17% last month. Volkswagen sold 2937 units last month, compared to 2501 units during the same period last year.
Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars said,
"We're extremely delighted with our performance this month. The consecutive growth reinstates the trust and preference of our customers in Volkswagen. Amidst tough market conditions, the brand has consistently delivered its value proposition to customers in this region."
Thoughts On The Car Sales Report In India For November 2019
The Auto Industry in the Indian market has been experiencing a major slowdown in sales from the start of the year. Although certain brands did manage to recover sales during the festive period, the overall sentiment has been declining in the Indian market.
As we enter the last month of the calendar year 2019 and the arrival of the BS6 emission norms, it will be interesting to see how this changes over the coming months.
